Welcome to the Newbie Guide

Greetings and welcome to the Newbie Guide!

I'm Opal, the creator and main admin of this site. I'm here to give you a quick show around to give you a good, basic understanding of Promethaen! If you need to talk to me or a staff member, there's usually at least one of us on. The bar on the very left of your screen will pop out a chat box that you can use to talk to us.

First, I'd like to welcome you to Promethaen. Thanks for at least taking the time to check us out! This is my so-called "master roleplay," containing all my best ideas mushed into one fantastically crazy bundle. This means that it can be quite confusing--but I like to think that a complicated roleplay is more enjoyable because of how intricate and interesting and unique it can be.

Some basics about Promethaen roleplay:
- Humanoid, with shifters.
- Fantasy/steampunk/sci-fi.
- Literate.
Despite the fact that we're literate, don't be spooked. We just want a few paragraphs, and there's no minimum length--all we ask is that you more or less mirror your partner. I'm not super strict about enforcing this, I just want you to try your hardest. If you're not sure you can make the literacy level, we'd be willing to help you out! just ask us. We're not scary.

Rules and Information

So now that I've introduced the site, you're probably wondering some merited questions about our rules, policies, and roleplay world. Those are easy to find, luckily.

Click here to check out the rules.

Click here to learn more about the world. You can also read the box directly below this for an explanation of the plot in simpler terms, because Opal thinks she's funny.
Note that the page linked above contains a bunch more links with individual threads for each aspect of our world. You should read through all of them, as they're all important.

It's also a good idea to check out the announcements board to get a knowledge of what's currently going on in Promethaen.

Opal Explains the Promethaen Plot in Simpler Terms

ok so basically
a while back in like ancient times
y'know all the pantheons of gods? greek, egyptian, norse, etc.
well they're all real
but they're actually aliens
dragon aliens
who can shapeshift
and were like "hey let's pretend we're gods because it's a saturday morning and the telly's broken so we don't have any cartoons"
it was a bit more complicated than that
but that's pretty much what happened.
anyway so they gave humans a bunch of knowledge and tech and stuff in exchange for being gods
but then these aliens (they're the Promethaen, btw) got into a war and they just upped and left earth
and people were like "wot" for a while but then were like "whatevs" and went on with life
so then in the 1800s
another dimension smacks into earth
and barfs up all these giant dinosaur-like monsters into the world
and people are liek "Shiiiiiiyut there goes civilization"
BUT THEN
LUCK HAPPENS
and so people rediscover these cool lil' dragon-like things called snow drakes
and they get all this steampunk technology
and then they're like "screw living on land" and all jump aboard airships and form into five clans (armfastrung, bjornung, hrafnung, lennarting, and wulfing) and then survive because there's only one behemoth that can eat you when you're flying.
but since everyone became like these pirate vikings
a bunch of fights break out
so then these people are like "y'all need to quiet down, so we're gonna forsake all clan ties, tame some drakes, and then keep the peace."
and so they do.
and those are teh Drakonrhedi, and that's what the roleplay focuses on.
and then the war with the Promethaen end and so they're like "hey what's been up in earth HOLY CRAP WHAT HAPPENED looks like we're going to secretly start watching you guys like the creeper alien dragon gods we are and send a bunch of shapeshifted agents down because we're pretty sure the behemoths are actually the pawns of the race that we just fought a war against"
and then the roleplay's like right as the Promethaen have infiltrated humans.
oh and the humans are also shapeshifters 'cause i felt like it

Introducing Yourself & Character Creation

Introducing yourself can be hard, especially if you don't know anyone. That's okay, as we've got an entire board dedicated to meeting new members. Go ahead and post your thread saying hello here! Also, don't be afraid to talk to us in the chat box, which can be found by clicking the bar on the left of your screen. It'll glow when you hover over it. I'm pretty proud of that particular fact.

All of these links can be accessed fairly easily using the Forum page. Although it may seem like there's a lot of boards, you get used to them soon enough and learn which ones are what. I wouldn't sweat it personally.

Once you've introduced yourself, it's time to get to work building your character. I figure you've probably got a good idea of what you'll want to be playing after reading through the information. If not, may I suggest a Drakonrhedi? The roleplay does focus around them, and we always need more. A Tiro is a good starting place for a beginning roleplayer, because as an apprentice you'll be learning all of these things isntead of teaching them. You'll need a character form, of course, which can be found right over here in the Creation board.

What does your character look like? If you want a face claim, head right on over there. What's a face claim? It's basically a list of all the anime characters and people that roleplayers have used for their character, just to ensure that we don't have two people looking the same.

I try to give a lot of character creation freedom. Just obey the key rule: make your character human. Even if they're a Promethaen, they have to have some flaws, otherwise they're a bore to write. If they're bad enough, they become a dreaded Mary Sue. Mary Sues are characters who are completely perfect, and often are supposedly hated because of it. Really, though, they're just a pain for everyone involved. So make your character flawed!

Before you can roleplay, though, you'll need to have your character accepted by the staff. All staff members have the power to accept characters--but some may prefer to wait for me to swing by. Don't worry, you'll have plenty of time to roleplay even if it takes me a bit to accept your character!

Most often, characters are accepted on their first shot. If we (the staff team) do reject a character, it's usually because there's a few things that we'd like to see patched up. Once again, don't worry. We're laid back people, and won't hold it against you. We just want to see you improve. If we give you critique, please don't snap at me. Instead, ask the staff member about anything you're confused on, and then fix what's necessary. If you truly believe that a staff member is being unfair, then please personal message (PM) me. If I'm the one being unfair, then contact another staff member, and they'll bring it up with me. I try my hardest to be reasonable, but we're all human.

Once you've gotten through all that... you can finally hop into the roleplay!

Roleplaying

Congratulations on making it this far! Your character is accepted, you have survived the eager greeting of our members. Now it's finally time for you to roleplay.

How do you get a partner for roleplaying? Usually, you just ask around until you find someone with the time and open characters. However, if you want a more intricate plot, head on over to our connections board to scheme away. Scheming is also done over PM, which makes Opal crazy curious. She'll just have to shut up and deal.

Also, please don't forget to post your character log! It makes life a lot easier for the staff. There's a special board for that here.

Usually we have some sort of plot or another. Check out the announcements board to find out more about whatever plot we're currently running. I won't link to that, you've gotten at least two links to it already, and you've got to learn how to use the forum sometime.

Other than that, you're pretty much ready for whatever. If you've got particular questions, never be afraid to ask a staff member. Once again, welcome to Promethaen!

Reading this? There's a hidden page of the forum. If you can find it, I'll reward you with plot spoilers and praise. Go. I DARE you. Try and figure it out.

Looking to Improve?

New to roleplaying, or just afraid that you don't meet the literacy standard for Promethaen? Never fear! We've got a special tutor board where you can find people that will help you improve your roleplay.

Inside, you'll find some guides to stuff like grammar or writing replies, as well as threads where you can sign up to have one of our more experienced members tutor you. You can also request critique for a particular post.

Access the tutor board here!
