Kaelan could feel his annoyance drain away as she spoke. Honestly, he was glad that emotions like anger or annoyance never stayed for long. He’d seen men hold onto anger for so long they practically cracked under it. It made one unthinking and uncaring, and he didn’t like it. Being so blinded by those emotions held no appeal for him, and he didn’t understand how others could let it rule their lives. "You can bind any object you want together with the right amount of magic. These are the Eagle and the Serpent. The Serpent provides horizontal motion. Put on your arrows, they would travel further, given the same force. This would also make them hit harder. A useful rune to know for one such as yourself." The Tiro gave a small smile at her comment. It definitely was a good rune to know. A longer trajectory with the same force would come in handy for an archer; it would make them just as lethal at a longer distance, and it would make it easier to pick off the enemy. "The Eagle provides vertical motion. You could use it to shoot arrows high into the sky to bring down a Chorata, or perhaps just to see how high you can get your shots." Larael drew a circle around them and placed her hand in the center. What if one put them together? Would they- "Runes can move each other, as I'm sure you can see."[/i] The runes lit up brightly before the light faded away to reveal the moving circle. Kaelan watched it for long moment. "Ah. The appearance of the runes depends on your magic type, but it's purely aesthetic. We'll get to intention later, but for now your magic type isn't important." “When you put the runes together, you can make them move any way you want, and you can move an object in any direction as well. Does it matter how many runes you put together? And is it only as powerful as your magic?”

“When you put the runes together, you can make them move any way you want, and you can move an object in any direction as well. Does it matter how many runes you put together? And is it only as powerful as your magic?”
Larael nodded. "Each rune refines the motion a little bit more, adding some power to it. Arrows will fly straighter, axes will cut deeper, and swords with thrust with more force."
I should have him enchant some arrows once we get down to application. He'll like that.
She sketched a strange, pointed "U" shape with a flat bottom on the board. "This is the Trough rune. It collects pretty much anything you intend it to collect when you charge it. For example, all along the deck of the Drakonborg are trough runes which collect sunlight and channel it below deck. That is the light that allows us to see down here."
Dragging the chalk across the board, she drew another shape. "The Bucket allows you to store things that are captured by a Trough for later use. The amount a single rune can hold depends on its size and the intention. For example, one could apply poison to their weapons and store it in a rune. That way, the rune would automatically poison the weapon for each strike." She nodded.
"Do you have any questions, Kaelan?"

So the more runes, the easier it is to make whatever you want to do move in a seamless motion, and adds a bit more power to it. Larael drew another shape, an odd-looking U on the board, the chalk in her hand tapping against the hard surface. "This is the Trough rune. It collects pretty much anything you intend it to collect when you charge it. For example, all along the deck of the Drakonborg are trough runes which collect sunlight and channel it below deck. That is the light that allows us to see down here." Hm, he’d not really thought of how the lower decks were bathed in light before. It hadn’t ever been on the forefront of his mind. It was just something he and most other Tiros had taken for granted. Now it made sense, a lot of sense. What else was powered and caused by runes on the Drakonborg? Kaelan was starting to understand the importance of runes. One worked fine by itself, but add another rune and it worked even better, flowed better. Not to be cliché and all, but two was definitely better than one. And from what it seemed, they relied a lot on runes. "Do you have any questions, Kaelan?" He thought for a moment. “I’m assuming there a ways to break a rune, yes? If, say, you have a sequence of runes and one of them is destroyed or broken or something, what would happen to the other runes? Would they just keeping functioning as if that rune had never been in play or would the entire thing just stop working?”

Larael smiled. He was asking good questions -- important things relating directly to the function (in this case, non-function) of the greater system.
She re-drew the spinning circle and set it going again. As it spun, she erased one of the runes. The circle began to deform as one of the runes holding it in a circle disappeared. It soon ceased being a circle and became a line, drifting across the board until it reached the edge, where it got "stuck" and sat there, helpless.
She tapped the board. "As you can see, erasing a rune will cause the system to attempt to function without it, usually with disastrous results. In this case, there are no bad consequences, as it's just a demonstration, but the point stands. Removing a rune can cripple or destroy entire systems, so we do our best to protect them. Most runes are protected with lacquer or paint, and in metal or wood they're carved in."
Larael nodded to herself. Kaelan was, or at least appeared to be a good student, and she was glad to be teaching him instead of a Tiro who was more interested in beating behemoths with sticks and rocks than a planned assault. "Any further questions?"

Larael re-drew the circle and with another flash of light, had it spinning. It began to erase one of the runes. As she did, the circle wobbled and bent out of shape, and by the time she was done erasing, it had formed into a line. Kaelan followed it with his eyes as it travelled to the edge of the board and stopped. He was sure that if there hadn’t been an edge, the line would have kept moving for a very long time. He looked back at Larael as she tapped the board. "As you can see, erasing a rune will cause the system to attempt to function without it, usually with disastrous results. In this case, there are no bad consequences, as it's just a demonstration, but the point stands. Removing a rune can cripple or destroy entire systems, so we do our best to protect them. Most runes are protected with lacquer or paint, and in metal or wood they're carved in." Runes were powerful things, but weak too. They relied very much upon another and they worked together like cogs in a machine, doing whatever you so desired, but that was also its weakness. Because they relied on each other, if one was removed the entire thing would fall apart, and Kaelan had no qualms that it would end up in disastrous results. A single rune was just as important as the whole, and each individual one must be protected. "Any further questions?" “Adding a rune that wasn’t supposed to be there would have generally the same effect, yeah?”
