Thalia continued her shooting, eyes trained on the red dot in front of her. Now that her muscled were getting into a routine, more and more of the arrows were landing closer and closer to the center. She knew that fatigue would set in eventually, but for now she powered on, releasing one arrow after another. As she reached into her quiver, she would take a guess as to how many arrows she had left. Eight. Shoot. No, maybe six. Shoot. Definitely four. Shoot. She didn't notice Faolan move. It was as she aimed her third-to-last arrow that a flying object sped past her face at a quite fast speed. The girl recoiled slightly, firing at the same time. She only caught a faint glimpse of the arrow as she turned her head to see what flew past. As quickly as the object had passed her the first time, it began to do so again after ricocheting off of the far wall. Thalia took a step back so that it wouldn't hit her and debated what to do. There was no way that she could shoot something so small and so fast, not at her skill level. Another option was to catch it. Not knowing how fast it was moving made her cautious, however, as it might easily be able to go through her hand. Instead, she watched it whiz by a second time, deciding she would rather be yelled at if she was wrong than risk the injury. Once the object was passed her and on it's way to the wall, Thalia used her peripheral vision to check where the arrow landed, and wasn't the happiest about it. The shaft of wood had punctured the target, but too close to her previous mistake arrow for her liking. A feeling of dismay began to spread through Thalia's mind, and she felt the urge to correct it. So she did. Pulling another arrow from her quiver, Thalia took up her position a step back from where she was standing - should the object choose to grace her with it's presence again - and fired, this time hitting the target within the red circle on the inside. Without looking at Faolan, she asked, "What is that?" --- Tags: Faolán LaighaenNotes: Yes, yes they should!

Faolán watched as the arrow streaked toward the target, but instead of it striking near the rest of the grouping it slammed into it rather close to other off-mark arrow. Ah yes, She had been unprepared for the ball. Hadn’t even been aware of it by the way she flinched, causing her arrow to fly where she hadn’t wanted it to go. He had broken her concentration. Broken it good and well for the girl was now staring at the ball as it came racing back towards her instead of looking at the target. If she had been actually fighting someone, they would have taken advantage of the situation. Yes, she needed to concentrate on the task at hand, but she also needed to be aware of her surroundings and not be taken surprised by anything. She would learn, Faolán would make sure of that. Thalia took another step back as the ball hit the wall just beyond the desk and put an arrow to her string. She fired the arrow, putting it straight on the mark, and without turning asked what the projectile was. The ball sped past both of them. “You have one arrow left,” Faolán decided to say instead of answering her question. “What are you going to do?" Right now she had two options: trying to stop the ball that had ricocheted once more and was heading back in her direction or shooting the target with her last arrow. --- Tag: HarnietNotes: Eh, it's a bit short.

Rather than answer her question, the Pryfektus instead gave her another challenge. She knew she wasn't good at multitasking, and she knew that he knew that fact as well. Hence the challenge. He wanted her to pick between them. But it really wasn't that difficult of a decision. Thalia didn't reply to her mentor, instead plunging right into her choice. The final arrow was pulled from her quiver, and she lined it up inside her bow. She pulled her string taunt, arrow ready to go. Thalia raised her bow and aimed, waiting for the flying ball to be in proper position. If she didn't wait, she would most likely miss. Once she felt confident, she unleashed her arrow, lowering her bow once it hit it's target. Pleased with her decision, she waited for Faolán's response, wondering what he had in mind for the "proper" choice that could have been made. As she waited, she studied the arrow that she had just shot, protruding from the back of another arrow that was further embedded into the wall-mounted target. She also wondered if he would ask her to explain her choice. --- Tags: Faolán LaighaenNotes: Yikes, mine is pretty short as well. Guess writer's block is eating at me a bit. Thalia didn’t hesitate as she took the final arrow from her quiver. She waited a few moments and lined up her shot, aiming for the target. With a twang the arrow left the string and a moment later had struck another arrow on the target. Good. Very good. She hadn’t let a distraction veer her away from what was in front of her. Instead she had taken it into account and had acted despite it. Exactly what Faolán had wanted her to do. There were still some faults he could see, but they were just beginning with their lessons. There was still plenty of time to remedy them down the road. Faolán waited for the ball to come speeding back his way before he slowed it down significantly and caught it. He examined the ball for a moment. Despite the fact that it now had runes carved into it and that it was heavier than it appeared, it was a normal wooden ball. And, much like people, just looking at it wouldn’t tell one of all of the surprises it contained. The man looked up at Thalia. ”That was a distraction,” he said, finally answering her question. “And one you handled fairly well.” Most people would have taken that comment at face value— you did well it would mean to them—but Faolán meant more than just that. Fairly well: could have done better, still room to grow. He tossed the ball to Thalia. ”Remember that despite the distractions around you, you must be focused yet fully aware of everything.” --- Tag: HarnietNotes: It's perfectly OK

Thalia took her teacher's comment at all of the values it contained. Of course, she preferred to think that she did indeed to well, but she also considered that there was room to grow and improve. She had a feeling that exercises like this one would be coming up pretty often in their lessons together, and that soon she would be thinking that was everywhere; in the lunchroom, while she was up on the deck, everywhere. Not that that was a bad thing. It was what she needed to do. But that could be difficult for a girl who liked to have fun ... Faolán's next set of words confirmed her theory. ...despite the distractions around you, you must be focused yet fully aware of everything. Even as he spoke he began instilling that in her in actions, throwing the wooden ball to her. She caught it in a gentle hand, rolling it between her fingers. Thalia felt the texture of the wood, a common habit she'd picked up as an archer. All wood felt differently, some much better than others. The ball itself was simple, of decent quality, and nicely smoothed for a ball. As she was looking at it, she made note of the ruins that were drawn on it, undoubtedly by Faolán himself. Runes were a weak point of hers as well; after her ... accident, she had put her training into the physical aspects of fighting, not even risking runes for fear of a devastating slip up. --- Tags: Faolán LaighaenNotes: Thanks
