“Yeah, you really do. Gotta keep that reputation up, right?” The kid gave a small laugh and smiled at Shepherd. He returned the smile with one of his own.
“Yeah, can’t let others think I’m nice, can we?” He joked. Not that having reputation tarnished by one conversation meant anything to him. He could only imagine the looks he would get instead of nervous glances at his scars. Maybe that would be nice for once. Eh, whatever.
“I must say, though, that talking to you isn’t that bad. So are we just going to stand here and talk, or are you going to teach me?”
Shepherd smirked and stood up straight, taking off his jacket.
"Alright then stand up! The first thing you should always keep in mind is that your opponent will aim at whatever weakness they can see. Which means you should always be prepared to counter them. Sometimes it could be a dodge or you may need to do something else entirely."
As he spoke, he examined the Tiro and thought of what to teach him first. Then it stuck him as he looked at the place Kaelen's arm used to be. I wonder how good is your balance? He thought, sending a swift left hook straight towards the lad's most obvious weak point. If he was smart he would dodge but if he was experienced, he would dodge and have a swift recovery. From what he experienced, balance could mean everything in a fast fight. If one didn't have balance they wouldn't be able to recover in time to be able to dodge again, if needed. If it was hard for normal people to control their overall balance, he wondered how well Kaelan would do?

“The first thing you should always keep in mind is that your opponent will aim at whatever weakness they can see.” Well, of course. That was kind of a no-brainer. Going for someone’s weakness could quickly turn the battle in your favor or end it completely before it even really started. But then you could also underestimate the person and their weakness ended up not much as a weakness as you originally thought. Shepherd continued talking, saying that he had better be prepared when someone aimed for his own obvious weakness- his missing arm. Kaelan was listening to the man, but he was also scoping out his weak points. Obviously the man’s left side. He was half-blind. But also he had years of experience when it came to dealing with it, and he no doubt knew exactly how to defend himself against people who tried to steal up on his left. So what other weaknesses did the man have? Obviously not his strength. The man was quite a number of inches taller than Kaelan and definitely had a lot more strength. Did he have speed though? Was he agile? He was broad-shouldered and had more weight than Kaelan, which could potentially slow him down. Even as Kaelan was sizing up Shepherd he noticed the man’s eyes go to his shoulder and linger there. Really? So you tell me that people are going to aim for my weakness and that’s exactly where you look? Not subtle at all. Kaelan shifted his weight to the balls of his feet. Maybe the man was going to strike somewhere else. Nope. The man’s left shoulder dropped slightly as he swung, aiming for Kaelan’s own. The Tiro moved slightly to dodge it, his left shoulder going back. Shepherd, in the process of going for Kaelan’s left shoulder, had let his left side become exposed. The young man was not about to let the opportunity pass and jabbed, aiming for the man’s side.
