Larael sat down at a desk in an otherwise empty training room, depositing her books on the surface. Fateseeker plodded after her and stopped at the foot of the desk, laying down immediately.
She was supposed to be meeting a Tiro here, though she was quite sure she was early. The reason for this was twofold: First, it would tell her something about the Tiro if he came late (or not at all,) and it gave her the upper hand to already be established at the desk by the time he arrived.
I hope it's not another brute.
She selected a volume on the Battle of Lepanto and took careful notes on the positioning of ships and how it was applicable to airship-to-behemoth and airship-to-airship combat. Larael briefly considered putting her feet up on the desk, decided against it, and scanned the room for potential footrests. Finding none, she leaned back in the chair and continued to read as she awaited the arrival of the Tiro.

Kaelan was moving through the ship, heading to the training room to meet his mentor. He had decided to get there a few minutes early, for it was always better to be early or prompt rather than late. Or, at least in his mind it was. He walked unhurriedly, avoiding people as he came upon them, and they, for the most part, took no notice of him. Upon reaching the room, he noted the emptiness of it before he glanced back to the table. She was sitting there, reading, and her snow drake was lying at the foot of the desk. Kaelan wondered briefly how long she had been waiting as he came to stand before the desk, eyeing the snow drake in a not overly concerned manner. He ran a hand through his green hair before he let it drop. Clearing his throat to get her attention he glanced at the book in her hands. It was on the Battle of Lepanto. Interesting. Was she strategizing? Using history to make notes of what could work in the future? Very interesting indeed.

Fateseeker perked up suddenly as the newcomer cleared his throat, and Larael looked up.
A young man was standing there, eyeing her and the drake unconcernedly. She stood up, smiling professionally. "Hello, there."
They know to send me the bookish ones. I like that. She made a mental note to send a positive note to some of the Vetr.
She sized him up, and Fateseeker looked at her, seemingly confused as to why she was paying attention to this stranger and not him.
Larael drew closer to the Tiro, offering her hand, "Pryfektus Larael Astriddottir. I understand that you will be taking lessons in the nuances of strategy with me."
Crossing over to another corner of the room, she grabbed a chair and set it down at the desk, opposite her. Fateseeker reluctantly moved to the side of the desk, resting his chin on the corner of the table. She sat back down in her chair. "Before we begin, I'm going to ask you a few simple questions."

She stood, smiled, and greeted him. Her smile wasn’t exactly a warm one, but it wasn’t cold either. It just was. Coming from behind the desk she offered her hand. "Pryfektus Larael Astriddottir. I understand that you will be taking lessons in the nuances of strategy with me."
Kaelan took her extended hand and replied, “Kaelan Avallochson. Yes, I am.” He then watched as she crossed the room and picked up a chair. She set it down on this side of the desk and then went back to her previous position. Her snow drake moved out of the way and rested his head on the desk somewhat begrudgingly. His amber eyes curiously watched the creature for a moment before they flicked over to Larael as she spoke. A few simple questions, eh? They were probably to find out how much he knew or some such thing. Kaelan gave a curt nod and sat.

“Kaelan Avallochson. Yes, I am.” ))
Fateseeker snorted at the Tiro, seemingly resentful of his presence. How dare anyone come and draw his mistress' attention away from him?
She nodded slowly, then placed her folded hands on the desk. "Tell me, Kaelan. What is the best way to defeat an enemy?"
She wasn't really looking for a "right" answer there. Anything other than "Hit them as hard as I possibly can!" would satisfy her. She had specific answers in mind, though they mostly lent themselves to responses to whatever he said.
Larael pushed the books on her desk into a line in front of him. One of them was on the Battle of Lepanto, the book she had been reading. The other two were on Agincourt and Crecy. "And which one of these interests you most?" She personally liked Agincourt, since it taught the lesson of judgement, but either of them would also teach a valuable lesson.

Kaelan glanced over at the snow drake as it snorted, before he returned his gaze to Larael. “There are no specific ‘best ways’ to defeat an enemy. Sheer strength can get one so far, but the same can be said of planning, stealth, and speed. One must be flexible and well-balanced in battle; anything is subject to change at any moment, but it is always good to have a strategy first. It is also good to know your own weaknesses, just as you should know, or at least learn of, your opponents.” She pushed three books towards him. Two, the ones on the battles of Agincourt and Crecy, were from the Hundred Years’ War, the other, the battle of Lepanto, and the one she had been reading earlier, was a naval war. Frankly, all three were good in his opinion, but Agincourt was slightly better. The king to whom the victory went made a wise decision using his longbow men to gain the advantage over the much larger army. It was also a bold move to put out his troops farther than he wanted to draw his opponents in. It could have been disastrous, but it wasn’t. Kaelan leaned forward and tapped on the cover of the book that was on the Battle of Agincourt. Sitting back, he watched her face for any signs of approval or disapproval, or anything at all.

Well, well. Someone gets it. Impressive. She gave a small nod, "Well said. It is important to know your own forces, the enemy forces, the environment, and any changes in the engagement that might occur."
Possibly unknown to him, her expressing any approval might as well have been high-fiving him. She was known to be extremely difficult to please, in addition to being a brutally efficient, by-the-books officer.
Kaelan had tapped the book on Agincourt, and she almost smiled. Agincourt was a personal favorite of hers, so the fact that he liked it only reinforced her opinion of him. She took the other two books and put them back in her bag. She tapped the book cover from her side of the desk. "What do you know of Agincourt, then? Tell me, and tell me what it can teach you about judgement."
Fateseeker snorted again, blowing her white hair across her face, which she quickly fixed without losing composure. She leaned back a little, waiting for his response.

Was that approval? It sure sounded like it. Well, it was good to know he was starting off on her good side. Larael removed the other two books from the desktop and placed them into her bag. She then tapped on the book on Agincourt, saying, "What do you know of Agincourt, then? Tell me, and tell me what it can teach you about judgment." Kaelan’s lips twitched as her snow drake snorted once more, sending her hair in her face. She fixed it quickly and leaned back, waiting for him to reply. “October 25th, 1415; it was the English against the much larger French force on a narrow, recently plowed field. The English force was made up of mainly archers, the rest were footmen. The French were made up of heavily armoured men-at-arms and mounted knights. This worked against the French because it had rained the night before, making the ground muddy, and hindering the French as they fought. “It was the English, though, who started the battle. The king, King Henry, knew his men were tired and decided to take advantage of his situation. He told his men to advance and set up stakes as defense. The archers then let their arrows fly. “The French cavalry attacked, turning up the mud even more before they were forced back. The first line of the men-at-arms came next. They pushed back the English archers but the archers took up other weapons and retaliated. The second French line advanced as well, but they only made it worse. By pressing in from the rear, the French men-at-arms were forced to come together, unable to wield their weapons. The English took the advantage, killing or taking the rest prisoner, and thus winning the battle.” What can it teach about judgment? Kaelan thought for a moment. “Never underestimate your opponent, and don’t overestimate yourself. That is where your downfall begins.”

“October 25th, 1415... thus winning the battle."))
She nodded, once again pleased by his knowledge. They should send more like him. "It is important to note, as well, that a properly timed cavalry charge would have decimated and likely routed the English forces, but due to confusion on the part of the French, they chose not to engage. Hesitation is not an ally on the battlefield."
“Never underestimate your opponent, and don’t overestimate yourself. That is where your downfall begins.”))
Though she was looking for the point she had just given him on knowing when to attack, consideration of the forces at play was a lesson few Tiros understood. She nodded again, "True."
She leaned back in the chair again, and her drake continued to stare dejectedly at her. Larael stroked his head, and he let out something like a purr. She returned her attention to Kaelan, "So now that I've determined not only that you have something between your ears, but that you have something of relative value between them, I'd like you to tell me a little about yourself.'

"It is important to note, as well, that a properly timed cavalry charge would have decimated and likely routed the English forces, but due to confusion on the part of the French, they chose not to engage. Hesitation is not an ally on the battlefield." So know the most opportune time to attack and act on it. Of course. How did I overlook that? Well, I am still learning, and she has years of doing this on me. The pryfectus began to stroke the rather glum drake. It began to purr, or something close to it. Obviously the drake liked the attention Larael gave, and was unhappy when her attention was elsewhere. It reminded him slightly of a puppy. "So now that I've determined not only that you have something between your ears, but that you have something of relative value between them, I'd like you to tell me a little about yourself.' Kaelan would have been happy if she had stopped before the last part. Something about himself? He hated questions like these. He never knew what to say. It wasn’t like he had done anything impressive. He was just a quiet kid who liked strategy and stealth. He ran a hand through his green hair—which he’d have to re-dye sometime soon; the roots were starting to show—and shrugged. “My spirit animal is a leopard, which I tend to take after its quiet nature. Um… I’m good with distance weapons, specifically the longbow and throwing knives.” Oh man, why was this so awkward all of a sudden? Did she feel it too? “I like strategy, obviously,” he shrugged again.

She watched him with interest as he formulated his response. She could practically see him thinking, though he chose not to say anything about her bit on hesitation.
Fateseeker continued to purr as Larael paid attention to him, and when she returned her attention to Kaelan, her drake tossed his head in annoyance.
“My spirit animal is a leopard, which I tend to take after its quiet nature. Um… I’m good with distance weapons, specifically the longbow and throwing knives.” ))
She could tell he wasn't used to talking about himself. Admittedly, she liked it better when people didn't talk about themselves all that much. However, in an environment like the Drakonborg, being able to expound what one was capable of got you put on special missions (and, more to the interest of most Tiros, out of the "boring" stuff.)
Despite his discomfort, she looked back at him with a practiced, professional calm. "Do you have experience with firearms?" She reached beneath the table and came up with some sort of silver handgun, resting it on the table.

Yep, that drake was definitely like a puppy. A jealous, white, overly-large, flying puppy. Same thing, right? Sure. "Do you have experience with firearms?" The question caught him off-guard. Uh… What? She then proceeded to take out a silver handgun from under the table, placed it on the tabletop. Again… What? Kaelan shook his head. “No, not really.” As in no, he didn’t. Sure he wanted to be a sniper, and that meant actually handling a gun. Yeah, he had examined one or two, but he’d never fired one. He knew the gist, but again, he’d never had the experience of firing one. Knowing of and knowing how were two completely different things, and he wanted to know how, not just know of. Was she going to teach him? He hoped so. He really did.

“No, not really.” ))
She nodded quickly, then stood up. "We should fix that, then. As important as tactics are, application is equally important."
Larael looked around the room for something appropriate to shoot at. Unfortunately for both her and Kaelan, whoever had used the room last had broken the last of the target dummies and not replaced them. She looked around the room, turning to Kaelan. "I'll be right back." She turned and left the room, heading for a storeroom where she knew firearms targets were located. Fateseeker plodded after her, snorting at Kaelan as he passed as if to say, "Ha, ha. I get to go with her."
She returned minutes later dragging a heavy, man-shaped block of wood behind her with the help of her drake. Setting it up on the far side of the room, she returned to her desk, picking up the silver gun. "This isn't quite a typical firearm, since it projects your natural magical energy as a form of bullet... but it'll do. Watch out, it still kicks." She pointed the weapon at the target dummy. Despite having no visible trigger, the weapon discharged with a blinding flash of light. The target rocked back and forth for a moment before settling, a glowing white hole going through it about halfway. She spun the weapon and handed it to him grip-first. "Focus your energy to fire, and do your best to hit the target. Don't worry if you miss, we have more than enough people to repair tiny holes. Do try not to miss, however.

She stood. "We should fix that, then. As important as tactics are, application is equally important." Yes! She was going to teach him. Kaelan suppressed a smile, and nodded instead. Application was definitely important. He then watched as she glanced around the room, looking for something, probably a target. "I'll be right back." And before he could offer to help, she had sauntered out of the room, her drake following as it snorted at him. Kaelan quirked a brow at it as he watched it go. Yeah, it definitely seemed like the jealous type. Larael came back in dragging a dummy with her, the drake helping as well. “You know, I could have helped,” he said as she set it up. She came back over and picked up the gun. "This isn't quite a typical firearm, since it projects your natural magical energy as a form of bullet... but it'll do. Watch out, it still kicks." She then let off a shot, the target rocking from the force. Handing it to him she said, "Focus your energy to fire, and do your best to hit the target. Don't worry if you miss, we have more than enough people to repair tiny holes. Do try not to miss, however.” Kaelan took the gun, feeling its weight. Bringing it up, he mimicked how she had held it and focused for a long moment, aiming just above the hole she had made. The gun went off, the rebound surprising him. The flash that accompanied it wasn’t bright like Larael’s; it was darker, definitely not blinding, and had a very light blue tint to it. Looking at the target, he saw that it was rocking, but he had hit it nowhere close to where he had been aiming. In fact, he’d barely hit what would have been someone’s right shoulder.

As Larael returned to the room with the target, Kaelan spoke to her.
“You know, I could have helped,”))
She waved a hand, "It's quite alright. I am more than capable of moving things."
Having passed him the gun, she crossed her arms as she waited for him to fire.
He did so, and she looked after the faintly blue energy as it shrieked towards the target.
As the wooden effigy rocked back and forth, knocking on the wood back and forth until it settled, leaving a brief period of silence as she inspected what he had done. She evaluated the "wound."
"Not necessarily fatal. Not a terrible shot, either. Again. Keep firing until you feel your power depleting."
Larael was as much interested in working on his marksmanship as to see how deep his magical reserves went. Ideally he'd be able to fire a few more times without much effort. Most Tiros she had dealt with had been able to squeeze out three or four shots before beginning to struggle.
