Thalia didn't really know why she sat down. She hadn't really worked that hard, so she certainly wasn't exhausted, and there wasn't any turbulence to make her lose her footing. In the end, she just felt like sitting. She traced the floor beneath her with a thin finger, drawing intricate, invisible lines on the wooden floorboards. Sometimes she would hit a little niche, and wondered how it got there. This room had to have been used for many years before she was even born, and that dimple could be older than she was. She heard his answer without looking up, nodding a small bit. Kaelan. The name suited him well. She herself never really could tell whether her own name fit her, but she figured there was nothing she could do now if it didn't. Now she looked up at him, studying his back as he returned to his knife throwing. He had impeccable aim, and he was just muscled enough to make that aim deadly. In the back of her mind, she hoped that one day he and her could have some good conversations about archery. His critique could probably help her. A lot. But she knew that to get to that point would take him time. She'd be content enough with him letting her talk to him. She wondered if they'd even see each other after today. "Well, Kaelan, it's a pleasure to meet you." Thalia caught his glance, and she replied, "I'm Thalia." --- Tags: Kaelan AvallochsonNotes: Yeesh. My turn for a short post. So sorry!

Thalia. It was a nice name and had a good ring to it. Over all he liked it. Kaelan sent her a small smile, one that wasn’t hollow or sad, one that reached his eyes (slightly). Well, at least it was better than the previous ones he’d given her. “And you.” He did mean it. It was nice to meet her. After all she had gotten some sense into his head. Now it only it would stay. He, of course, would try his hardest but sometimes it wasn’t enough. Try was all he could do about it at the moment he supposed though. So he’d let it be for now. Whatever happened in the future happened and there was nothing he could do about it. He glanced down to his belt. One knife left. Looking back up at the target he pursed his lips. He didn’t really want to collect the others still stuck in the wood after this throw, call him lazy, but it was true. Ah well, maybe this would be his last throw then today. Afterwards he’d collect them then be on his way. Yeah, that sounded like a fine idea. He could go practice with his magic afterwards too. Yep, it was settled. Well, if Thalia didn’t say something before then. Kaelan took a breath and threw. The blade hit the mannequin, a bit off to the right of the others. He looked over the knife riddle target for a long moment. The young man had definitely improved over the past while he’d been in here. Still not close to perfect, but much, much better. Good. That was what he wanted to see. The young man then strode up to the target and began to pull out his knives, not yanking them out like he had before. Tags: HarnietInspiration: - Notes: It's okay! ^^

Thalia beamed at the small smile Kaelan offered her. She may have overreacted, but seeing it touch his eyes made him look so ... different, than he had before. And the fact that he actually was glad to have met her was like icing on the cake. Mmmmm, cake. She wondered if the chefs on board would be making some anytime soon. It'd been a while, and she felt her stomach rumble a small bit in agreement at the idea of eating some.
Wow, easily distractable much?! Thalia laughed a small bit at her own thoughts. Yep, definitely distractable. She'd really need to work on that. Then the girl realized that she had completely forgotten about her training, and had blotted out the sound of the wooden ball. Now it blared in her ears again, a constant thud-swoosh-thud repeated above and behind her. She turned her head around to watch it go back and forth several times, before also realizing that she hadn't quite thought her method of training all the way through. The Tiro had no real idea of how exactly she was supposed to stop this runed thing. Her eyes turned back to Kaelan as he threw his last knife. Thalia didn't know if she was just imagining, but it looked like he was far less eager to retrieve them this time than he had been any of the times before. Maybe he was done training for the day. A ping of some feeling swept through Thalia, and she didn't know what it was. But the weird emotion took hold of her, and before she could really decipher what it was, she decided that she really didn't want the boy in front of her to leave yet. "Umm ... Kaelan?" The words came out a bit timid, but Thalia figured she best power through. Flicking her eyes from him to the wooden ball and to him again, she asked, "I don't suppose you'd be up for helping me stop this thing?" --- Tags: Kaelan AvallochsonNotes: Sorry for the late reply! Let’s see, he should probably just continue with extending how long he could actually hold his magic. Working on his concealment skills was a good idea too. Explore every part of his magic and become skilled in it. As Anton had told him at the party a while ago, it had to be ingrained in you until it became second nature and that took practice, lots of it. Kaelan wasn’t looking forward to the practicing part at the moment and he’d need to find some part of it he enjoyed to keep himself looking forward to doing it each day. "Umm ... Kaelan?" Thalia’s voice sounded a bit… hesitant. Hesitant? What did he do? What happened? “Hm? The young man pulled the knife out of the wood and turned to her, placing it back in its proper place. He watched as her eyes darted from him to the object still streaking from wall to wall behind her and back to him. …Did she not- "I don't suppose you'd be up for helping me stop this thing?" She didn’t know how to stop it. Kaelan’s lips parted as a confused looked washed over his face. He closed his mouth and tried again. “So you know how to start it, but you don’t know how to stop it?” Was she that bad with her magic? Or maybe it wasn’t hers. Someone else’s? Runes perhaps, but he wasn’t sure. “Uh, yeah. Sure.” Kaelan left the last two knives in the wood of the target and walked until he was standing in front of Thalia. He watched the thing bouncing back and forth. If it was runes, he was pretty sure it was at the moment, the Serpent most likely, then all he’d have to do is just stop its motion. Several of the shadows about them darkened and shifted. Kaelan brought them together then made them reach out and harden, catching the thing midflight. He brought it to him and the shadows deposited it in his hand. It was a ball, he could see that now, with only two runes inscribed in it: the Trigger and the Serpent. The wood was smooth except for the carvings and was finely made. It was heavier than it looked too. Hmph, odd. The young man then knelt and held out the ball for Thalia to take. “Here.” Tags: HarnietInspiration: - Notes: Hehe

Thalia could read the shock on his face like a child's book. By her age, almost all of the Tiros, or even the teenagers not of the Drakonhedi, were at least capable of using magic. She was probably the only one who wasn't. For a moment she buried her face in her hands, trying to compose herself. Not that it did her any good. She'd been around many different people on this ship, and none of them had made her feel this awkward. In fact, she'd known herself for seventeen years now and hadn't met anyone who made her feel this awkward. She still didn't know what it was about him, though. These thoughts didn't make her upset, though. Rather, as she pulled her fingers away, they revealed her smiling, blushing face, clearly overrode with the embarassment that she felt inside. “So you know how to start it, but you don’t know how to stop it?” Well, he was half right. "Yea, you could say that," Thalia went with, running a hand through her hair as she watched him approach her. He stopped right in front of her, so close that she had to tilt her head back to look at his face. She kept quiet as he studied the situation, not wanting to interrupt him. Thalia took the moment to look over him again, and this time she let herself look to his missing limb. To her, it held an equal amount of sadness and questions, both of which rattled her mind. She wondered if he would be offended by her if she asked him about it ... A shadow moved to her left; one she knew neither of them had made. Her eyes darted from that shadow to another one not far off, and then to yet another one, watching them converge around the wooden sphere. It was a small thing, just his magic, and yet she was near-captivated. Sometimes she wondered if she had these moments because she hadn't had much of a childhood. Thalia's green eyes returned to Kaelan as he knelt in front of her, holding out his hand. She smiled at him, reaching her hand out to take the object from his. As she pulled it away, her fingers trailed over his - not on purpose - and she could tell he was an archer. All bowsmen had a similar texture to their hands, her included. "Thank you," Thalia replied, placing the object carefully into the pocket of her pants. --- Tags: Kaelan AvallochsonNotes: He's such a gentleman

Her fingers lightly grazed over his as she took the ball from his hand. She smiled, thanking him, and pocketed the ball. Kaelan smiled back at Thalia and replied, “Not a problem.” It really wasn’t. Hadn’t really been anything on his part. So if she couldn’t stop the ball, could she just not use magic at all? Was she that good of an archer? Kaelan knew that he had been primarily chosen for his own skills a bow, but the magic part had been a major bonus—it was a rare thing to be picked on one’s skills alone without having been star-touched. If she had no magic then kudos to her, she’d have to be better than he had been at archery. Now that he’d like to see sometime, maybe he could ask her later on. Her request taken care of, Kaelan stood, turned, and began walking back to the target to finish retrieving his knives. He stopped in front of the mannequin and reached up to the knife that was protruding from what would have been its throat. His fingers curled around the handle and he pulled at it. It took a moment, the knife apparently much preferring to be stuck in the wood then resting beside the others in the holster, for him to pull it out, but it did come free. Kaelan placed it next to the others and reached for the final knife. Tags: HarnietInspiration: - Notes: xD he can be

"Not a problem."Somewhere in her mind Thalia knew it wasn't going to be a problem for Kaelan to stop the ball. She hadn't known what powers he had, but he seemed like he could've figured something out nonetheless. It was moments like those that made her curious as to why the Drakonhedi had even allowed her to join them. Granted, she knew the answer, but it wasn't really one that she liked. For a few months in the beginning she'd told herself that it was because she was very skilled as an archer, and was a good and fast learner. But eventually her mental facade had faded, and the truth had lingered ever since, pushing her to try even harder and make her first scenario true instead. Yes, she was great with a bow and arrow, but the only reason why the Drakonhedi would even consider letting her train with them was because the Hrafnung had practically begged them to take her. They had dealt with her long enough, and let's face it, nobody wants a burden forever. Thalia could see where they were coming from, and the day she packed her bags to leave wasn't one that she held in scorn. Everyone from her clan had pitched in in her years of need - whether they wanted to or not - and that was more than anyone could ever ask for. It made her glad to leave that day; to take the weight of her off of their shoulders. It had also made her that much more nervous when she arrived to her new home. To the people who'd accepted her into the program, she was basically not star-touched at all. Everyone knew it was safer for her to not use them at all than it was to try and control them. They all knew what happened the last time. Thalia watched Kaelan stand and return to his task of collecting his knives. She'd been thinking of her own troubles, and yet his still prodded at her mind. He seemed like such a nice guy, and yet fate had decided to rip one of the things he loved most away from him. It seemed so cruel. "You were an archer, weren't you?" Thalia asked the question, having too many sound pieces of evidence to back it up with not to. Still seated on the floor, she could feel her one foot falling asleep and shifted her position. Now, as she looked up at Kaelan, her knees were folded up to her chest, just high enough so she could rest her chin on them. She wrapped her arms around the front, almost hugging them to herself. "Before you lost your arm?" --- Tags: Kaelan AvallochsonNotes: I'm thinking she's going to ask how it happened in her next post, just wanted to lead up to it a bit

Kaelan’s fingers stopped only centimeters from the handle of the knife as he froze. Looks like he hadn’t been able to keep everything from his voice earlier. Oh if only. …Heh… if only. He seemed to be saying that a lot lately. If only this hadn’t happened, or if only that. What good was wishing something had or hadn’t happened? Wishing didn’t change a thing. Wishing didn’t make things better. Wishing only made one long for something else instead of concentrating on the here and now and making the most of it. Wishing did nothing any good. So stop wishing, Kaelan. Stop saying if only. He took a breath and let it out slowly, gripping the knife handle. It only been a fraction of a second since he had paused and he hoped that she hadn’t really noticed. Kaelan took longer to remove the blade from the wood and licked his lips before he said without looking at her, “Yes. I was.” There was nothing else to say. He had been an archer and that was that. The Tiro looked down at the knife at his hand, studying it for a moment before he turned to her. Thalia had brought her knees up to her chest and wrapped her arms around them. Her chin rested lightly on top of them. She was watching him. Kaelan held her gaze for a moment before he looked away then down at the ground. Please don’t ask any more questions. He wanted to say it, but couldn’t bring the words to his lips. He could leave. Just start walking, it’d be easy, but he felt rooted to the spot. Tags: HarnietInspiration: - Notes: Okay!

Thalia didn't catch the pause that Kaelan took. She didn't catch the slowed timing of his movements, either. She did hear the long, slow breath that he let out, though. It was obvious that it was a very sensitive topic to him, and that was a fact that she had known fully before asking her question. And yet she'd gone right ahead and asked it anyways. As he pulled the final knife from the mannequin, she thought that he might just up and leave. After all, he had every right to and no obligation to answer her question. Especially one so touchy. But he stayed. And he answered her question as well. “Yes. I was."Her eyes went soft with his comment, and she bit the inside of her lip softly. From a physiological standpoint, the fact that he told her was quite a step. The fact that he did so without rage, an even bigger one. Of course, Thalia wasn't a psychiatrist. She was just the girl he'd met less than an hour ago who already felt herself starting to care about him. It was amazing how sensitive she was to others sometimes, even if they rejected her for it. She was always the girl back in her clan who tried to help wherever she could, and never stopped until she either achieved her goal or someone told her to stop because it was impossible. Even then she was reluctant. But it was never for herself. She just wanted others to be happy; to be ok. Kaelan turned to her, and their eyes met. She couldn't read exactly what was in his, but she got the feeling they held a lot more than she could ever guess at. Thalia could've stared into them for longer than socially acceptable, except that he broke the contact. A small feeling of worry took her over, and it grew a bit stronger as his gaze went from simply away from her down to the floor. She'd learned the hard way that a Drakonhedi with their eyes down was a bad sign. But he didn't move, and he didn't leave. Maybe - whether he knew it or not - he had something that he wanted to release. Had he ever really just vented to anyone? It sounded like something that only angry people do, but Thalia knew that it was actually healthy, and that most people, herself included, felt much better afterwards. You just had to find someone who would listen. And for the boy in front of her - if he wanted her to be - she could be that person. " Kaelan, what happened?" Thalia kept her eyes on him, gentle and wondering. --- Tags: Kaelan AvallochsonNotes: derp :3

"Kaelan, what happened?" Kaelan could feel her steady gaze on him but he didn’t look back up at her. She’d asked the question he didn’t want her to. She’d asked the question he didn’t want to answer. Other people had asked though and he gave them the short answer, “was attacked, got injured, and that’s that” and walked away. He’d written the entire thing down, but he hadn’t really told anyone. If Larael had been around, he’d probably have told her, but because she wasn’t, he couldn’t. Maybe it was time to tell someone, even to Thalia, a girl he didn’t really know. But why would he open up to her, a girl he didn’t really know, and show her his raw wounds? He already had though, even if it had been an accident. Kaelan couldn’t bring himself to meet her gaze and instead took a number of strides away from the target before he faced it. What had happened? A lot. Much more than he cared to remember. Kaelan flung the knife and it hit the mannequin dead on with much more force than previously. He wasn’t as far away from it as before and he wasn’t sure if that was the major factor that the knife sunk in farther in the wood. It probably was. He took out another knife. “We, Gethin and I, were walking the streets of Midgardborg when The Shuck decided to attack. He went after Gethin first, killing him.” His grip tightened about the blade’s handle. He once again saw the Shuck’s teeth scything into his friend’s neck, the scarlet bursting forth from the gaping wound, the Tiro’s body twitching in the last throes of death. He once again smelled the flood of iron that had diffused into air that night. Kaelan threw the blade. ”Dainn, The Shuck, then turned to me. I let off several shots; only one actually striking him. Next thing I know he had his arms around my neck and was telling me that he was going to make my death slow. I dropped my bow, pulled out my dirk and stabbed him.” Kaelan felt no satisfaction this time in the fact that he had wounded Dainn. Only emptiness. His fingers reached for a knife. “But instead of releasing me, he picked me up and threw me into a window. Dainn’s voice shouting in his ear again practically made him flinch. “The window shattered and I found myself in a butcher’s shop. I’d lost my grip on the dirk, so I picked it up and backed into the shop. It was thundering and lighting by then and when The Shuck stepped over the broken window to come after me the rain began to fall.” Kaelan flung the knife. It hit the mannequin and he watched it for a moment before he took out another one and continued. “He picked up a cleaver and it didn’t take him long to corner me. I wounded him again, slipped by him, and got out through the window. But I hadn’t stopped the Shuck. I hadn’t taken many steps when he pinned me to the ground. I thought he was going to kill me. But… but instead he said that his fun ‘would end so quickly’, that ‘death is too easy.’” “But living your life in constant pain? Always struggling on? There's the true challenge.” Kaelan could hear Dainn’s words again hissing in his ear. “’ I want to make you wish that you had died by my hand this night, Kaelan.’ And the he brought the cleaver down.” Again and again and again and again and again. Kaelan could feel his body start to tremble at the memory and the pain but he shut it down, clenched his jaw, and threw the knife. “It was nothing but agony and I wanted it all to end. After that, Vetr Vyrrson came.” Kaelan’s voice became quiet. “He let me go, Thalia. He wanted me to suffer for the rest of my days.” And sometimes I think it would have been better to have died that night. Kaelan took out another knife and examined it before he let out a soft sigh and lifted his head to look at the target in front of him. Tags: HarnietInspiration: - Notes: It's long

Right from the start, Thalia got the feeling that there was a lot more to his arm than just the loss of it. It started when returned to his knife throwing. He's been finishing up before, and yet now the memories were pushing him into action. Rather forceful action, at that. The first blade he threw sunk so far into the wood that she wondered whether or no he'd even be able to get it out. Then it was followed by his opening statement, which briefly began to fill in some holes. She'd originally thought that he had lost it in battle, or maybe a fatal training accident. Being attacked by The Shuck was ten-thousand times worse, and a hundred-times when you considered the fact that one of his friends had died. They had just been walking. Not looking for trouble, nothing. Just a downright brutal attack. And as more words flowed from his lips, it only got worse. Dainn had given Gethin a quick - though still not acceptable - death, and yet he'd wanted to make Kaelan suffer. It didn't seem like there was a grudge being held by the 'devil', just a cruel and taunting decision to have some sick fun. Thalia would've, at any other time, been quite impressed by hearing that someone had wounded The Shuck, especially more than once. But right now all she wished was that those wounds had killed him. But the story was continuing, and she knew they hadn't been much more than mere scratches. She involuntarily tensed when he mentioned being cornered, and for a moment she wished he would stop. Thalia hadn't thought that the story would be so sick and twisted, and yet here it was, coming out of a boy who was probably the least deserving candidate of it. Thalia watched as Kaelan started to tremble ever so slightly, and she silently raised herself off the floor. With each of his words she took a step closer to him. “He let me go, Thalia. He wanted me to suffer for the rest of my days.” Dainn wanted him to suffer. To regret life. To fail. The worst part was that it was such a torturing thing to say to someone that it had actually affected him. He was believing The Shuck. From an outsider's view, it wasn't a physical combat, but a mental one. Aside from the initial wound, it was now a battle of the mind, and Thalia knew that. She slowly came up behind him, a million things racing through her mind. Most people would say something like, 'It's ok, it's over now.' But there wasn't one part of that statement that wasn't a lie. It wasn't ok, and it was far from over. Instead, Thalia closed the small distance between them and hugged him, wrapping her arms lightly around his waist. "Well, you'll just have to not give him that satisfaction, now won't you?" --- Tags: Kaelan AvallochsonNotes: Gawd, I'm so sorry this reply took so long! x.x

Kaelan didn’t hear Thalia as she stood up from the floor and began walking over to him as he spoke. He didn’t know that she was behind him until her arms wrapped about his waist and his reaction was probably not what she had been expecting. Instead of turning around and hugging her back or even just standing there, he involuntarily flinched away from her gentle touch. His grip tightened on the handle of the knife and his breath caught in his throat. Kaelan had never been much of a hugger or a person who showed their feelings through touch. But this? This was a bit much, even for him. But Kaelan knew why his body had reacted the way it had. It was another gift from Dainn, one he hadn’t even known about, after all the Shuck had come up from behind when he killed Gethin, and he had come up from behind when he tackled Kaelan to the ground. The Tiro forced his still tense muscles to relax after a moment, but he didn’t reply to Thalia, he didn’t even apologize for flinching away from her. She’d probably back away, apologizing to him all the while and then never attempt to touch him again, most people would. It wasn’t her fault though. No, it was Dainn’s, but there was nothing to be done about it at this particular moment in time. Kaelan supposed that it would eventually fade with time, but for now he’d have to deal with it. Kaelan threw the knife, making sure he didn’t accidently hit Thalia as he drew his arm back. It struck the wood of the target for a moment before it fell and clattered to the ground. He watched it passively for a moment before he looked down at the girl’s slender arms still wrapped about him. She had such hope in him, such belief that he could overcome what The Shuck had done to him. Somewhere in the back of his mind he knew that he could, but… No, no I suppose I’ll not have to give him that satisfaction. Tags: HarnietInspiration: This. Specifically the first verse. Notes: Bloop

Thalia felt the boy tense in her arms, flinching away from her. Maybe he wasn't one for touching or contact. Or maybe she'd finally found the boundary that he wasn't quite ready to cross yet. And that was ok. She understood that things take time, probably more than he himself did. She'd gotten him to tell her what had happened, and she was even shocked that he'd gone that far. So she took his involuntary movement as a small, subtle sign along with the glace that he sent down to her arms and released him from her hold just as he went back to knife throwing. She knew that in the brief moments she'd known him, she'd probably emotionally wrung him out. Thalia always pushed people too far, and she was starting to get the feeling that she was reaching that point with Kaelan. The last thing she wanted to do was push him away, so she turned around and wandered the room for a moment, leaving him to his thoughts. Of course, her being her, she'd only made it about halfway around the room before her thoughts drifted. To the subtle sound of noise in the hallway of people moving about. There wasn't a clock in this training room, and there wasn't access to the sun from down here, so there was no real way to tell what time it was except for those people. And a large movement of people really only meant one thing to these Viking-style people. Food. Thalia's stomach rumbled slightly as she debated going for lunch. Things had gotten pretty heavy in this room for both of them, and she was itching to dig herself out of it. Would Kaelan think I'm rude if I changed topics? Would he find it insensitive? She weighed the odds in her head as she turned her head over to the green-haired boy across the room. Thalia put on a small smile, deciding that she really did want to go eat. "I think I'm going to go for lunch," She said aloud, wondering if Kaelan was hungry as well. If he wasn't, then this would be goodbye until they randomly met up again. He'd probably want the room from her, anyways. --- Tags: Kaelan AvallochsonNotes: Kind of, maybe, a little from Run by Snow Patrol, but not really xD

Thalia removed her arms from about him and stepped away. He glanced at her for a brief moment then took out another knife, but instead of throwing it he put it back and sat down where he was. Kaelan stared blankly at the target, not really thinking of anything, and it took him a moment to realize she was speaking again. Apparently she was hungry, and now that she had said that he realized that he was too. But right now he wanted some peace to think instead of joining up with the throng of people headed to the mess halls. They were always so loud and distracting. “All right. I guess I’ll see you later then?” There was no guarantee of that actually happening though. Different schedules and all that. A part of him hoped that they would see each other again sometime. And what? Be emotionally drained again and talk about things that were better left untouched? Yeah, ‘cause that’s exactly what I want to have happen next time. He nearly laughed at the thought. It didn’t take long for him to be left alone with his thoughts. Why had he opened up so quickly to Thalia? It wasn’t like she was anyone important; it wasn’t like they had been friends for a long time and he knew her well. For goodness’ sake he’d only just met her! So why had he told her practically everything? Maybe because it was time to tell someone, maybe because she asked and then actually cared about him. Maybe… With a sigh, Kaelan stood and gathered the knives before walked over to a wall and sat against it. He brought his right knee up, leaving his other leg stretched out before him, and rested his elbow against it. Kaelan then rubbed his forehead. He was tired and rightfully so. Maybe he wouldn’t practice magic later. Maybe it was time for a nap. That sounded like a rather brilliant idea. So, he stood and left the room, letting the door close behind him.
