In old myths and legends, all across the globe, there are several recurring themes: gods, dragons, and celestial beings descending from the sky to guide the people.
The Promethaen are all of the above.
Each Promethaen are no particular one god or figure in mythos, but instead the same beings assuming a number of personas throughout history to guide the entire human race. Shapeshifting draconic aliens with their own interstellar empire, the Promethaen is endowed with magical prowess and the pride of a wyrm.
There are remarkable similarities between many of the Promethaen conventions and human conventions, as the humans' civilisation was based off of the dragons'. For example, both count in base ten, as both humans and Promethaen have five fingers on each hand/paw.
A Promethaen is, essentially, a dragon: however, they are incredibly elegant beasts. They usually look something along the lines of:
However, precise coloration is determined by the type of star that they're born next to, as well as what elements are found in the debris surrounding it. Promethaen nests must be made within 0.5 AU (roughly 7.47989 × 107 km) of the edge of a star--the exact distance is dependent upon the type of star. The type of magic that they're born with is also dependent upon the type of star, and since humans use the same method to call upon magic, they share this trait as well. Promethaen typically live for anywhere from three thousand to five thousand years.
When born, Promethaen are greeted by their parents (usually, sometimes they're brought via a transport to their parents) and are given their Designation Name. Although this is a rather callous way of putting it, it's basically a first name. They will be called this until they come of age at roughly 100 years old (not precisely due to the differences in their time measurements, but more or less) at which point, depending on the path they wish to pursue and their talents, they are given their Calling Name, which is more akin to a title. Calling names take the form of "the ____" the blank being an adjective which describes them and their path in life. Calling Names are not passed down from parents to children, but many times the children will take the same Calling as their progenitors.
Their social structure is a caste with three distinct levels: the Minor Promethaen, the Major Promethaen, and then the Exemplars. The Exemplars make up a group called the Infinite, a ruling council for the entire race. However, this structure is fluid and based entirely on power, whether that's personal influence, knowledge, tactical expertise, or combat skills. Current members of the Infinite vote on whether or not an up-and-coming Promethaen should join their ranks. The maximum number of Exemplars possible is 40, but most of the time they hover at about 10. The Exemplar, being the leaders of the Promethaen, each have a role as one of the 'major gods' of the old religions.
In addition to magic, the Promethaen also have incredibly advanced science. However, unlike our science, which relies on machines, theirs is that of genetically fused and modified organisms. Their starships are literally living beings, made up of a multitude of species working in tandem to support a much larger being to cruise through space. Instead of AIs, they have OAIs--Organic Artificial Intelligences. These are a benevolent virus that can be injected into a Promethaen's body, acting like a friend to them as well as providing technical support. OAIs can contact other OAIs through a telekinetic beacon system, thus enabling long-distance communication without the use of any handheld device. OAIs can also keep tabs on a Promethaen's body, enabling them to know precisely when they'll need to eat or how badly they're injured. OAIs communicate via neuron signals in the Promethaen's brains, sounding like a voice inside their head. OAIs can also be removed, but it's a major surgery.
Having returned to the world that they once left when embroiled in their own strife, the Promethaen are rather interested to see how their little humans are holding up. As such, the Promethaen have tapped into their intrinsic magical nature to shapeshift into human form and infiltrate the humans' society. Meanwhile, curled up on Mars, a star cruiser awaits, transmitting data from the spies on the surface back to the Promethaen's home planet. A flock of Promethaen have thusly been dispatched to immerse themselves in differing aspects of the world, made aware of each others' identities through the OAIs they carry. Each time a Promethaen shapeshifts, they can choose what guise to take.
Another interesting point to note is that the Promethaen did originally genetically fabricate the Snow Drakes ridden by the Drakonrhedi.
