"I can sneak, and I'll be ever so well be behaved. Cross my heart." That settled it then. In two days, they would sneak Athie onto the airship that was destined to go to the Drakonborg, patiently wait out the ride, sneak off the airship and onto the Drakonborg, then celebrate their victory! Kai was silently nodding to himself as he thought all of this out; it was the perfect plan. "Yes, then it's settled! We are going to sneak you aboard the Drakonborg. Pack what you need and what you can. I'll pick you up from the Third Dock, which is just one over from the one we're using. And I'll give you some engineer's clothing, too. You'll need to look like you're supposed to be there."Yes, that would work wonderfully. Would it though? Doubtfully. Kai would have to worry about the specifics later. He was carefree and didn't often think about his consequences as much as he should, but that didn't mean he wasn't going to pick apart any flaws in their plan. This was something important, after all! Sneaking Athie onto the Drakonborg was more important than a lot of things that Kai could think of. Kai took a breath and slipped his arms out of the coat, the warmth of the fire making the coat just the slightest bit unnecessary. "So, how long do you think it'll take to cook?" Kai asked, extending his arms a bit closer to the fire, hands gripped in each other. His eyes watched the flames for second before turning to Athie, his head tilting a bit in the process. Athie was definitely someone Kai would like to keep around. He was nice, friendly, and most importantly, he held this regard to life that was so rare in these days. So often it was fight for what you love, but for Athie... Kai could describe it best as "live for what you love" instead of "fighting for what you love". The subtle changes in words created sch a strong distinction. And it was that distinction that was so important. Kai's lopsided head held more than just locks of hair that fell to the side, eyes that reflected the tendrils of flame, and a glowing smile. It held respect. Respect for the man sitting in front of him, respect for the people of Armfastrung, respect for the soldiers who defended the city, respect for the Drakonrhedi who were slain in battle or worse -- slain by their own kind. But more than anything, it held love. Love for life, love for people, love for the mystical powers he was granted, love for his ability to help others. Kai loved everything and everyone that helped him. "Yes, then it's settled! We are going to sneak you aboard the Drakonborg. Pack what you need and what you can. I'll pick you up from the Third Dock, which is just one over from the one we're using. And I'll give you some engineer's clothing, too. You'll need to look like you're supposed to be there."
Athie wriggled like an excited schoolchild sitting at a desk, all his feelings of anxiety dissolving into feelings of baited elation. He tried to picture in his head what the Drakonrborg would look like; how big was it, what kind of people lived there, were they all like Kai? If they were, Athie reckoned he was in safe company. His companion spoke his plan which such confidence, Athuraadd was eased into relaxation, rather then apprehension.
He'd heard stories about the Drakonrborg; sometimes, members of the Drakonrhedi who were previously Armfastrung came to visit their relatives and immerse themselves briefly back into clan-culture. Athie reckoned the lifestyle was very different; did they socialize? Have large gatherings filled with feasts and drinks and general merriment? Previously, he'd always viewed them as very aloof beings, too high in the hierarchy of society to expend energy on common pastimes. Perhaps that's why people like Anton took on a much sombre persona when the subject of clans was brought up, perhaps the transition was all too much to bear sometimes.
Still, a momentary caper on board the Drakonrborg could hardly go wrong, could it? Athie beamed at Kai, "I'll be ready. I'm ready for anything."
"So, how long do you think it'll take to cook?"
Athie hummed a little, then pulled out a long, metallic prong from his satchel, and proceeded to flip the meat onto the other side, "Not much longer now." he noted, reaching into his satchel again to pull out a pot of golden goo. "Honey." he explained, with a small smile. He unscrewed the top of the pot and proceeded to dip a single, outstretched finger into the syrup. He swirled it momentarily before withdrawing his thoroughly coated finger and popping it briefly in his mouth to suck the honey clean off. He offered the pot to Kai to do the same, and then quickly added with a sense of urgency, "Don't worry, my hands are clean. It's good stuff, all the way from home."
Athie set the pot down beside him and Kai, and reached into his bag to pull out a small brush, used for glazing. He dipped the brush into the pot, much in the way that a painter dips his brush into his palette, before leaning cautiously over the campfire to spread the honey over the meat, before flipping the slices to do the same on the other side, "Give that just a few minutes more." he murmured, more to himself then anyone else, then sat back, proud of his efforts.
A sudden thought occurred.
"Hey...you know you're Drakonrhedi, right?" He paused briefly over his next question, trying to figure out the best way to phrase, "Do you have one of those...flappy, fluffy lizard things?" He many little gestures with his hands, a slight grimace creasing his lips, proving he had absolutely no idea what he was talking about.
...that's what they were called, right?
Right?

Not much longer? Kai could hear his stomach giving a rumble. He was definitely in the mood for food. Especially in the mood for honeyed pork cooked by what seemed to be a chef that knew what he was doing. No offense to the cooks on the Drakonrborg, but it was nice to have a taste of a true Armfastrung's cook every now and then. The cooks on the Drakonrborg were typically... Less enthused with their job. They were soldiers first, after all. Kai smiled and nodded. "A few minutes more sounds wonderful. I'm certainly starving already, but I think I can wait for the final touches." It was, after all, only polite to wait until the creator truly felt it was ready to share. Sometimes this was never, and you had to respect that. But, oh, Kai could devour a whole horse at the moment. He wasn't originally this hungry, but the smell of meat wafting into his nose slowly made him quite hungry. "Do you have one of those...flappy, fluffy lizard things?" Athie asks, making a series of motions that Kai knew all too well. Admittedly, it was usually when he was a bit more than drunk when he forgot the word "drakes", but he definitely knew what it was like to have to describe drakes without sounding ridiculous. That was next to impossible, of course. Drakes were ridiculous, fluffy things that they rode around and pretended were majestic, but in reality, Kai just found them wonderful. Sure, some could be quite regal, but others were quite silly. They each had their own personality, practically from the day they were born. A handful of Drakonrhedi had the special treat of tending to the young drakes, especially if they were trusted by the drakes. Fairly little was done, as drakes were quite protective and loyal in general, even to their young. But just to make sure that they were developing properly and given any food that they needed. The mothers soon learned to trust the handful of Drakonrhedi that regularly attended them, even if cautiously. "I do! Mine's propably perched outside the forest, waiting to see if I need any help. They look a bit funny when on the ground, so I imagine they prefer to be on places like watchtowers and the like. Easier to take off when you can just drop down and let the wind pull you up, instead of having to generate all that lift yourself, you know?" Kai laughed quietly to himself, thinking about a handful of silly things that drakes did. Most notably, when they were trying to catch food like a fish, and their entire face just splashed into the water. "Her name is Vivian, and I tamed her about three years ago. Best damn friend I'll ever make." Vivian was definitely the best friend that Kai could ever make. She kept him safe, even if a bit too much so at times. She was quite a different personality than what Kai typically appreciated, but considering how much she respected him... Well, it was something that was hard to understand, but they absolutely lived for each other. Even just thinking about when someone's drake dies could bring a halt to Kai's entire thoughts and force him to check on her. "Why do you ask? Something specific that you want to know?" |

"A few minutes more sounds wonderful. I'm certainly starving already, but I think I can wait for the final touches."
At this moment, Athie had to restrain himself from rushing. He had a habit of being so desperate to please everyone that in the end, he ended up pleasing no one, especially himself. Luckily, Kai seemed like a patient, understanding individual, who could appreciate effort where effort was expended. Having said that, Athie was beginning to match Kai's sentiments about feeling famished. His own stomach was actively grumbling for food now, but he hoped the soft crackling of flames would drown out such sounds.
Remembering the whole reason he'd found himself lost (and thankfully in the company of a helpful stranger) Athie once again delved into his satchel and pulled out the small pot of herbs he'd recently purchased. He took the cork off the bottle with a loud 'pop!' and raised the rim to his nostrils. He took in a deep and sudden inhale through his nose, with the purpose of enjoying the fragrance. Instead, a small amount of the herb shot up his nose and in his shock and typical Athie 'I have no idea what just happened' style, he gave a small yelp before launching into a sneezing fit (although making sure he turned away from both the fire, the food and of course Kai).
Once he regained his composure (and indeed, once his cheeks stopped flushing quite so much), he gave a small, indignant cough and turned his attention back to his cooking. Pinching just a tiny amount of the herbs in between delicate fingers, he reached forward (making sure his sleeves were clear of the dancing flames) and sprinkled the stuff onto the honey-glazed meat, smiling with satisfaction as he did so. "Not bad, if I say so myself." he said, wiping his hands together to rid himself of the extra bits of herb that stuck to his skin. He reached again into his satchel and produced two wooden plates, plus some cutlery to accompany. He also took out a long fork and stabbed it into one slice of meat, carefully minding he didn't drop it into the fire and placed it onto one of the wooden plates, and then did the same with the remaining piece of meat. He held both plates in his hand, mused over them for a moment, and then proceeded to hand a plate over to Kai, making sure his companion got the larger piece. "Let me know if anything's wrong with it." he informed earnestly.
"I do! Mine's propably perched outside the forest, waiting to see if I need any help. They look a bit funny when on the ground, so I imagine they prefer to be on places like watchtowers and the like. Easier to take off when you can just drop down and let the wind pull you up, instead of having to generate all that lift yourself, you know?"
When Kai mentioned that his mount was most likely somewhere very close by, Athie gave a nervous glance around them, purely out of instinct. Even so, what cause did Athie have to be nervous? He'd heard stories about drakes, knew that they were supposed to be incredibly loyal to their riders, even after death, or so they said. So surely Kai's own beast was sufficiently under his command and Athie was perfectly safe. The slight bubble of nerves that were inside him were mainly down to the fact that Athie had never experienced drakes first hand, but he trusted Kai, so that alone managed to keep him relaxed.
"Her name is Vivian, and I tamed her about three years ago. Best damn friend I'll ever make."
Admittedly, Athie had always thought drakes were more like glorified pets than anything else, something akin to a lap-dog crossed with a horse...that could sort of kill you as well. But the way in which Kai spoke of his own drake, the warmth in his voice, was beginning to change Athie's perception. He was curious as to how one could have such a meaningful connection to such an animal, or any creature for that matter. He loved animals himself, but it was almost as if the Drakonrhedi treated their rides in the same they'd treat another human being. It was actually sort of...cute in a way.
"Why do you ask? Something specific that you want to know?"
"Oh...well, I...um.." Athie fumbled a little over his words as a barrage of questions flooded his mind; what's it like flying one? What do they eat? What do baby ones look like? Are they usually friendly? In the end, a complete different one flopped out of his mouth altogether, "Can I see her?" He paused momentarily, "...Vivian, I mean."

"Let me know if anything's wrong with it," Athie said as he handed Kai the plate of meat. To Kai, the meat looked absolutely wonderful. He cut through the meat and happily took a bite. Nope, nothing was wrong with it whatsoever. The food alone was worth making this new friend. He nodded earnestly at Athie, the food in his mouth making it quite hard to talk. (Well, not hard, but Kai preferred to not waste any food that he was eating.) After chewing for a moment more, he swallowed and said, "The meat is absolutely wonderful. I do have a question about your technique, though. Is it common practice for you to inhale the herbs or was that just special for me?"The grin on Kai's face showed that he was joking, but the grin disappeared quickly. Not because of something bad, but because he stuffed amount bite of meat into his face, and the chewing made grinning... Hard. Maybe he could practice that. Chew-grinning. That would be interesting. (Perhaps he could also stop being twelve, but that was not going to happen anytime soon.) And so they spoke over the food, and in the case, it was the topic of Snow Drakes. Or, as Athie clearly preferred, fluffy flappy flying things. Kai felt that "snow drake" was a bit too stiff at any rate -- fluffy flappy flying things was much better of a name. It fit their personality quite well. They were ridiculous animals, after all. There was a slight pause in which Kai raised a brow as Athie paused at the mention of his drake. Was he afraid? Or was he simply confused? Eventually, he said something (though not exactly what Kai was expecting). "Can I see her? Vivian, I mean."Oh. He wasn't afraid. Or at least, not of Vivian. Perhaps he was afraid of asking to see her? Though Kai couldn't see any reason why, it's not like the Drakonrhedi were too secretive about their drakes. They were, after all, extremely well know for that. "Of course you can see her. After we finish up this food, we'll go out of the woods and I'll get her down here. I might have to leave after that... I do have actual work to attend to tonight, sadly. But I will give you the full Vivian tour before I leave, all right?"He smiled at Athie and took another bite of his meat. It was almost gone... That wasn't too inspiring. It definitely was good enough to savour. Perhaps that's what Kai should have done? Nah, he was too hungry. And the delicious taste only made him hungrier. Ah, the pains of having someone who's good at cooking make you food. He could get used to this. If only he had the time. Tags: Athuraadd FallonkreathInspiration: what Notes: Two bad posts! "The meat is absolutely wonderful. I do have a question about your technique, though. Is it common practice for you to inhale the herbs or was that just special for me?"
Athie's usually pale cheeks flushed a familiar shade of pink at Kai's words. He nearly coughed on the piece of meat he was chewing, but after smacking his torso with a clenched fist, he managed to will his food down, despite the embarrassment. "Well....I...er." He gave an indignant wriggle and sat up straight, deciding to play along, "Yes actually. Common Fallonkreath practice. You wonder why the herbs taste so good, yeah?" He gave a small smirk, but gave a small burst of innocent laughter to prove he was only jesting.
Athuraadd was rather pleased the meat himself, relieved that his culinary skills hadn't dwindled during his time spent 'exploring'. Since he'd arrived in Midgardborg, he'd survived by buying small pastries and bits of cooked meat from market sellers. While convenient, Athie missed the simple pleasures he received from cooking, and being able to enjoy his efforts with someone else made it that much better.
"Of course you can see her. After we finish up this food, we'll go out of the woods and I'll get her down here. I might have to leave after that... I do have actual work to attend to tonight, sadly. But I will give you the full Vivian tour before I leave, all right?"
As Kai spoke, Athie was chewing the last few mouthfuls of his food, an excited smile trying to appear on his bunched up cheeks. He did feel the slight pangs of disappointment over Kai announcing he would depart soon after they'd seen this...flappy fluffy lizard thing, but it was suppressed by his elation for a scheduled visit to flappy fluffy lizard central the Drakonrborg.
Popping the last chunk of pork into his mouth and swallowing it down after a few urgent bites, Athie wiped his mouth clean on the back of his sleeve and reached over to take Kai's empty plate from him. The fire had significantly dwindled by now, having had no attention given to it for the past few minutes. Athie collected the plates and cutlery together and popped them into his satchel, making a mental note to clean them somehow later. He paused mid-shuffle, a thought crossing his mind. He bit his lip, and looked up at Kai, "Will she like me? Vivian? Only...I don't want to do anything that might..." He stopped momentarily, trying to search for the right word, "-offend her or anything."
Urgh... That sounded so silly.
Did drakes even get offended?
Athie had very limited experience of the creatures, only really knowing about them through word of mouth. They seemed to him like horses, but with wings, and supposedly more intelligent.
"I've never had any real contact with a drake before." Athie admitted, packing away the last of his things, "One of my brothers did once. Well, it was Vilkas actually." He swallowed hard; it wasn't the best of stories, "He was flirting with some Drakonrhedi woman who came to visit the clan one day and apparently her drake got really ticked off with him getting too close so it bit him on the arse." He tried to show a small sympathetic frown for his brother, but his small smirk betrayed him. Obviously he loved his siblings, but it was oh-so-satisfying when they got put in their place. Being the runt of the litter, you were allowed to secretly harbour such feelings. His smile grew as he remembered the incident, "He was so annoyed. Apparently he screamed like a banshee." He sucked in a sharp hiss of breath through clenched teeth, "Yeah. None of us wanted to put a plaster on him though."

Aha! So it was a family practice. That explained why he was so good at cooking then... It must be a secretive family thing, otherwise it would be known by everyone. There couldn't be any way that those simple herbs could make meat taste this good. Well, you could use magic too, but that would have to be some amazing magic to create food that tasted this amazing. The pork was a bit firm, but it had such delightful spices and rich seasonings sewed into it -- not enough to distract from the meat, however -- that Kai couldn't even care if it was tough. Damn. Athie was a good cook. Kai took the last few bites of his meat, setting the plate and cutlery down beside him. As he did so, he spoke of his drake. Honestly, Vivian wasn't the best drake out in the world. She was a fast flyer, but she was skittish and didn't trust others -- quite the opposite of Kai. But it would be extraordinarily difficult to convince Kai that Vivian wasn't the best drake in the world. In fact, either the person convincing or Kai wouldn't come out of the discussion alive if the person pressed hard enough. Vivian was the best that ever could be for Kai. And rightly so. Vivian thought the same of Kai. "Will she like me? Vivian? Only...I don't want to do anything that might... offend her or anything."That... Would be a difficult question to answer. Kai took a breath and smiled cautiously. "Uh.. She's kinda opposite to me. Where I like everyone that's nice to me, she... Hates everyone." Kai shook his head and shrugged. "So, if she doesn't like you, just go with it. She won't bite you or anything if you aren't hurting me, but uhm. I suggest not touching me or anything like that. She might take that as a sign of aggression, even if it's just affection." Affection? Athie was affectionate. Affectionate Athie. Affie Athie. Kai was having way too much fun coming up with names for Athie in his mind, so he shook his head and paid more attention to the story that was being told by his new friend. It seems that particular Drakonrhedi's drake was a bit less than welcoming of people, just like Vivian. "Drakes can be kinda protective of their riders. It's like, uh. Dogs. You wouldn't want to mess with a loyal dog, and it's just like that with drakes. Except. More flapping and lizardy stuff and fluff. And death."These descriptions coming out of Kai were the best. Maybe there was something in that meat? Or maybe he was just losing it because he was happy to find this friend? "It'll be good for you to meet her before we sneak you onto the Drakonborg, though."Tags: Athuraadd FallonkreathInspiration: no Notes: my brain is doing terrible things with the words "drake assault" Table made by Wildsky. |

"Uh.. She's kinda opposite to me. Where I like everyone that's nice to me, she... Hates everyone."
Before he could stop himself, Athie gulped.Great, already on a drake's hit-list and he hadn't even met the thing yet. Still, he was excited to properly meet one of the creatures face to face, and have some sort of interaction with it, even if said excitement tiptoed precariously on the boundary of anxiety.
Then again, he had Kai there, what was the worst that could happen?
"So, if she doesn't like you, just go with it. She won't bite you or anything if you aren't hurting me, but uhm. I suggest not touching me or anything like that. She might take that as a sign of aggression, even if it's just affection."
"Just go with it." Athie repeated, the words sinking into his head like a mantra. Naturally of course, he was an affectionate being, and having to refrain from physical contact with another living being would be difficult. Still, he reckoned a 'no hugging the flappy fluffy lizard' rule was better than missing a hand. He clenched his fists, like a personal reminder to himself not to touch Vivian. He gave a smile to Kai, his nerves being masked by newly found determination, "Got it."
"Drakes can be kinda protective of their riders. It's like, uh. Dogs. You wouldn't want to mess with a loyal dog, and it's just like that with drakes. Except. More flapping and lizardy stuff and fluff. And death."
Personally Athie thought Kai's description of drakes was actually rather endearing and cute, until the 'and death' part cropped up. His sweet expression fell flat then, and a grimace plastered his face. Was such a creature really capable of such a feat? Athie didn't doubt it. Still, it must be nice to have something so protective watch over you like that. Like a guard dog, but one that also doubled up as a mode of transport.
Rather practical, Athie mused.
"It'll be good for you to meet her before we sneak you onto the Drakonborg, though."
Finding new courage in Kai's words, Athie clasped his hands together and grinned, "What are we waiting for then? Let's go bond with a flappy fluffy lizard....thing." He made a move to follow Kai, but halted abruptly, holding a finger up in the air, "Just...make sure she doesn't bite my arse cheeks, okay?" He lowered his hand down again and proceeded once more, "I need them."
Athuraadd Fallonkreath, just what.
He stopped again, holding up another finger in the air, face turning a little red this time, "You know...'cause...I need them...for being...an arse."
You are such a monumental idiot.
