Athuraadd was wondering if he'd taken a wrong turn.
The pathway he'd been following was a path that he'd expected would take him to a rather interesting shop that specialized in exotic herbs and spices. Athie was a nerd for such things. There was a recipe he'd picked up from a nice market woman back in the Plaza that he'd been desperate to try out. With the meats carefully wrapped up in his satchel, Athie was missing just a couple of ingredients, but on his search to find them, he found himself to be a little, well...lost.
The quiet alleyway he had previously been traversing opened up into a swarm of activity. To the left of him, groups of large, burly men were hammering and chiseling away at various chunks of metal. To his right, groups of large, burly women were selling various chunks of metal that - upon further inspection - Athuraadd came to recognise as weaponry.
Yeah, he'd taken a wrong turn.
Smithing was a subject that Athie had very little knowledge in. Two of his brothers were in training to be blacksmiths, and through them Athie had come into contact with the practice of forging simple devices. Using the finished product, however, was a totally alien concept to Athuraadd. He struggled to hold an axe, swung maces all wrong and didn't know his swords from his daggers. His father, being a championed warrior within the Armfastrung clan, kept an impressive collection of prized weapons in his study. Athie would often keep him company when he was tiny, bouncing on his father's strong knee while staring open-mouthed at the vast array of deadly blades. He'd once tried to pick up the heaviest war axe his father possessed, the one with the dragon's head as the handle. But he'd failed miserably, and the weapon had pulled him face-first down onto the handle and nearly broke his jaw.
His brothers thought it was probably the funniest thing they'd ever seen.
While Athie himself was more of a pacifist than anything else, the look of the weapon market before him was surprisingly intriguing. He loved the look of the blades, even if he no idea of how to use one. He'd seen his brothers training with such weapons before with baited excitement and - at times - was nearly convinced into practicing with them. But his brothers were so brutish and rough they sometimes didn't understand what 'Ouch! I give up! I give up!' really meant. So Athie steered clear.
He approached a stall guarded by a hefty, blonde woman, who had bigger than muscles than Athie could ever get. Bemused, she eyed up the little viking as he approached to closer inspect the swords laid out on the table before him. Still, she remained silent and allowed Athie to gently poke at the blades. He was too frightened to actually pick one up, so he resolved himself to admiring them from a distance. A particular sword with a dark crimson handle grabbed his attention. The silver blade was etched with intricate engravings of vines that intertwined and curled right down to the point of the blade. It looked magnificent, and Athie thought it looked too good to tarnish will blood, although such colouring would lend itself well to the sword's handle, in the middle of which sat a small but strikingly visible emerald, cut in the shape of a diamond. "Wow..." Athie breathed, stroking down the blade with one outstretched finger.
"Like what you see?" the woman asked, eyebrow raised.
Athie could only respond in a dumb nod.
"Give it a courtesy swing, if you like."
Athie looked up at her, surprised. He was thankful of her generosity, but part of him wondered if she was only allowing him to do so for her own amusement. It was obvious Athuraadd wasn't a fighter, let alone knew how to correctly handle such an impressive instrument. He sheepishly rubbed the back of his neck, "I...um...er..." Suddenly an idea popped up. He quickly held up his wrist, which was wrapped up in bandage from a certain, previous skirmish. He pointed at his injured limb and gave a half grin, half grimace to the woman. "Hurt my wrist, you see. So...I...you know...don't want to aggravate an already delicate wound." He gave a (pretend) hiss of pain, just to emphasize his point. The woman didn't look convinced.
Athie couldn't blame her.

There was little else to do on a lazy afternoon in Midgardborg where your duties had been attended to than to simply walk through the streets, seeing the life pulse through the city like the heartbeat of mankind; the rush of excitement flowing from one person to the next. In truth, it was more like a wave – the people rarely moved as far as they spread their thoughts and ideas. And it was fitting that Kai would be the one to transfer these thoughts, to be simply another part of the whole. But Kai was not thinking about these things, no. He was watching the handful of birds that managed to live on the city fly about, living so peacefully with man. Even in the hardships of the world they lived in, there was the peaceful simplicities they could enjoy. The birds flew about, living in such a serene harmony with the people. The scraps that we would not eat could be given to the few animals that were here, and in return, they helped give a sense of life to the floating city. Kai took his time with the city; it was not mysterious to him, but rather, he enjoyed feeling the warmth of humanity as a whole. There were the stains on the city, but as a whole, it was a beautiful painting describing what humanity was. The people would bicker and love each other, and the fact that at the end of the day, they were simply people was so amazingly comforting to Kai. Of course, with being this lost in thought, Kai wasn't exactly paying attention to where he was going. He was simply walking through the streets and alleys, whatever had come his way. The city was not too large by any means, but it was still a city. As such, when Kai found himself stuck at a dead end, he was rather confused as to how he got there. He didn't particularly care about being lost. He knew that the people would help him if he even so mentioned the idea of being lost, but he found a certain type of excitement in this ridiculous adventure. Doing what only seemed natural to him, he followed the sound of people. There was a distinct sound of metalwork nearby, and he was curious about them. What he saw, however, was far more interesting than just a few blacksmiths dealing with metal and selling what they could. There was a man, just slightly taller than him, who was apparently either looking to buy a weapon or desperately looking for a way out of the situation. Kai wasn't quite able to tell from the cursory glance that he was given. In fact, the man also had a bandage on his wrist, which was even more curious to Kai. With a quick clear of the throat, he began walking up to the man and woman and started talking. ”Ah, hello! I'm not too sure where I am, but this place looks rather cozy,” he said, giving a slight nod to the warmth given off by the forge. ”I know it's not my place to ask, but may I ask what kind of weapon you're looking for? I've dealt with quite a few experienced swordsmen – though very few blacksmiths – so I can help you with the actual usage of each.” While it was true that Kai had dealt with experienced swordsmen, he had very little practice with them in all honesty. He was just hoping to get some type of clue as to why the man was here. He didn't look like a fighter or soldier, very slim and lean from what Kai could tell. But at the same time, the wrist-injury could have prompted him to buy some type of self-defense. It was a cruel, beautiful world, after all. ”I suppose I should introduce myself, as well. I'm Kai Raske, of the medics in the Drakonrhedi. It's a pleasure to meet you two!”Notes: have a bad kai post

Athie was still busy investigating the handiwork on the sword. Although champion poker by nature, actually lifting the object was something he dare not do. The sword looked way too hefty for him to pick up. The stall-owner had muscles bigger than his thighs, and she looked like a person who wouldn't take too kindly to him dropping the most beautiful weapon on display. She seemed to be getting rather impatient, folding her arms and huffing at regular intervals. Athie had drowned her out however. He was enjoying himself, and was content that he wasn't causing anyone any harm.
But his childlike captivation was suddenly interrupted with the arrival of someone new. Another young man approached, bright in nature and seemingly matching Athie in his cheeriness by what was laid out before them.
”Ah, hello! I'm not too sure where I am, but this place looks rather cozy,”
Athie gave a small, lopsided grin, pleased that he wasn't the only one who had got himself lost. He concluded Midgardborg was such a place where it was easy for one to lose themselves, both emotionally and physically.
”I know it's not my place to ask, but may I ask what kind of weapon you're looking for? I've dealt with quite a few experienced swordsmen – though very few blacksmiths – so I can help you with the actual usage of each.”
"Oh, I...um." The question had caught Athie off guard. He wasn't looking for anything, but he felt a little flattered that this man obviously thought he even had enough knowledge of weaponry to know which one to seek out. He had to be honest; he wasn't one to build up a false pretense that he was over confident in anyway at all, even to total strangers. Besides, if this guy was as experience as he said he was, he'd be able to suss out Athie in a heartbeat. "I wasn't really looking for anything. But-" He gestured to the sword, "I really liked the look of this one." He gave a big grin as he ran a hand gently down the glistening blade, "It's beautiful." he breathed, forgetting himself. Part of him questioned if he'd even suit such a magnificent weapon though. It was nearly half the size of him - definitely cause some stumbling issues down the line. The woman rolled her eyes.
"Are you going to buy it, or take it to bed? Because either way, it's gonna cost you."
"I..er," Athie was fumbling. He dare not even ask how much it was. He had money sure, but only for what he needed. His family had given him a hefty sum of money, but it had been given in the hope he was to spend it on 'useful things'. This included; food, travel, sleeping arrangements. Nothing frivolous. Then again, these were all opinions voiced by his mother. His father on the other hand had been adamant that weapons were -in fact- absolutely necessary for a traveling viking; 'What is he supposed to defend himself with? His ladel?' he remembered his father saying. 'He wouldn't even get that far,' one of his brothers chipped in, 'He would've run away by that point'. He looked back up at the woman, looking like a dejected puppy, "You can't bed a sword." he simply started, head down and embarrassed like a sulking child.
Thankfully this new man stepped in.
"I suppose I should introduce myself, as well. I'm Kai Raske, of the medics in the Drakonrhedi. It's a pleasure to meet you two!”
It was good thing Athie wasn't carrying the sword because he would have definitely just dropped it.
TThree people he'd met by name in the whole city. All of them had turned out to be Drakonrhedi. Did he have like...Drakonrhedi bait in his pockets or something? He wasn't complaining; both Drakonrhedi he'd met previously were great company. He was just more surprised than anything else. He had high hopes for this Kai fellow.
Quickly remembering his eyes had widened at the mention of Drakonrhedi, Athie shook his head quickly and cleared his throat with a small cough, "Hi," he offered sheepishly, "I'm Athuraadd." He stopped, "Well...it's Athie. I mean I like to be called Athie, it's not my proper name and you don't have to call me it, Athuraadd works fine too, if you want to call me that...Kai."

The man in front of Kai, who had later introduced himself as Athie, was not looking to buy or try. He was just looking at the craftsmanship of the swords (which was, in fact, very nice). These blacksmiths were ones that Kai knew the Drakonrhedi sometimes bought from. They made very good weapons, but from what Kai remembered, they weren't exactly too varied in their designs. The Drakonrhedi had very special needs, so they needed blacksmiths that could make strange weapons. But now was not the time to bash a blacksmith's ability! He wouldn't even dare say anything of the sort in the general area. These blacksmiths were probably more skilled at combat than he was. At the very least, they could throw him around like a sack of feathers, and Kai was rather hoping to avoid such a messy encounter with people today. Today was the day for friendly matters! Nothing else. The man that he just met introduced himself as Athuraadd (though he would rather be called Athie) and also seemed to stumble over his words quite often. That was all right by Kai's standards; it was actually kind of adorable that he was getting so flustered. Kai smiled, gave a small chuckle, and started to speak as he guided them out of the blacksmith area: “Don't worry, I'll call you Athie. As for the current matters, I think it's best if we find somewhere where we aren't disturbing people's work. As wonderful as swords are, I can't use one to save my life.”The joke was probably in bad taste, but Kai couldn't resist. He also couldn't resist giving a small snort of laughter at his bad joke, and quickly apologized for it. ”Ah, I probably shouldn't have said that, should I have? At any rate... Which way do we go? I'd quite enjoy being able to get inside.” Kai said, gesturing to the turn in the road, each way would probably lead them somewhere different. As much as Kai liked adventure, the weather was quite cold, and Kai had fancied rather light clothing that morning. His coat was left on the Drakonborg, as was the majority of his sweaters. So he was wearing a simple off-white cotton shirt and woolen pants. It was fairly warm clothing, but it was most certainly not suitable for the Drakonborg. Midgardborg it was better, but Kai was still a bit chilly. ”And speaking of jokes, what was that on taking a sword to bed?” Kai asked, raising an eyebrow. That was certainly confusing to him, but back there was not the time to ask about it. The woman would have probably not been too happy that they were wasting even more of their time, and she was looking quite impatient as it was.

“Don't worry, I'll call you Athie. As for the current matters, I think it's best if we find somewhere where we aren't disturbing people's work. As wonderful as swords are, I can't use one to save my life.”
Athie could usually deduce a person's personality on how they decided to address him; Athie if there were usually a happy person at their core and could easily tolerate his own bouncy personality, but if they referred to him as Athuraadd, they were usually of a much sterner disposition and Athie should take caution to t-r-e-a-d c-a-r-e-f-u-l-l-y around them. But this man used his much preferred title, so Athie immediately felt himself relax. He nodded happily, treating the newcomer to his best grin, "Sounds like a plan, Kai. I mean...I can appreciate a good sword but, I'll leave the actual swinging of one to the professionals." He gestured briefly the market stall owner, but she didn't seem impressed with his flattery, so Athie awkwardly withdrew his gesture and turned away to walk with Kai.
It wasn't until Kai's snort that Athie realised his new acquaintance had made a joke, which was odd, because Athie usually picked up on bad jokes as quick as a flash.
”Ah, I probably shouldn't have said that, should I have? At any rate... Which way do we go? I'd quite enjoy being able to get inside.”
Athie down both possible routes and bit his lip, "Well," he began, rather flummoxed that it was up to him to make the decision, "I had been looking for this particular shop before I...er.." He rubbed the back of his neck, "...before I got lost. A cooking shop. You see, I'm trying to find this particular herb for this recipe I'm making. Apparently there's only place in the whole of Midgardborg that sells it."
There was a brisk chill in the air today and Athie matched Kai's sentiment about getting inside somewhere nice and warm. He looked the slightly shorter man over; his attire wasn't exactly ideal for beating away the cold whereas Athie had remember to slip an extra layer on underneath his jerkin. Clearing his throat, he looked back up to make eye contact with Kai again, "Are you cold?" he asked, concern creasing his face. He made a snap decision, "Here." he said, slipping out of his jacket and handing it to Kai with a smile, "It's ok, I've got a load of layers on." He did feel a slight drop in temperature, but it wasn't enough to bother him. He was more than happy to help.
”And speaking of jokes, what was that on taking a sword to bed?”
Athie shrugged, matching the same confused look as the one Kai currently had painted on his bright face, "I dunno." He stopped to have a quick ponder, "I guess...maybe you could...? I mean, it would hurt, you know, 'cause of the point and everything." His mind was groaning; oh god Athie what are talking about just stop please, "Still, thank god I wasn't stroking a mace."

Athie was a kind man, that much was very clear to Kai. In fact, he could almost be described as obliviously kind. Then again, obliviously kind was most certainly not a problem to Kai. It could, however, be a problem for Athie in the future. The chances of him running into someone too dangerous was low enough, but Kai still made a mental note to see how things went with Athie. “I had been looking for a place before I, er... before I got lost. A cooking shop. You see, I'm trying t find this particular herb for this recipe I'm making. Apparently there's only one place in the whole of Midgard that sells it.” A cook? That was doubly as exciting for Kai. Not only could Athie make wonderful food for him, he would also probably avoid being his patient as often as others were. Sometimes the Drakonrhedi were just a bit too risky... ”Oh, all right. So are you a cook for a living? Or is that just a hobby of yours?” Kai asked, deciding on the direction that he thought was the one that led to one of the main roads. ”By the way, this way is hopefully the way to Market Plaza. From there I think we can figure out where that store of yours is, yeah?” Kai took the coat the he was holding that was generously donated by Athie. He muttered a “thank you” before putting the coat on and taking a breath. ”It's warm,” Kai murmured, stating the obvious. The coat was bound to have residual heat from Athie. ”It's comfy.” The only response that Kai had to the kindness of the man was to offer a beaming smile before turning back to the adventure at hand. Making love with a sword would certainly be fatal, if nothing else. I'm sure the impossible amount of lacerations would also be a bit uncomfortable and stingy. Of course, Kai wasn't about to say these things. Partially because he found the words to be a bit unnecessary, and partially because Athie had spoken of stroking a mace. Kai let a laugh flow from his chest and began to shake his head. All of this while navigating the alleyways through the lesser used parts of Midgardborg. Thank the gods that Kai was quite agile (he was trained to be a battle medic, after all). ”What, you're not a fan of having your inner organs crushed? Not to mention probably your hips too... That would be terrifying, for certain. I would probably have to pass on that offer.” A final laugh came from Kai as he rounded another corner, one step closer to the Market Plaza. Or perhaps one step further from the Market Plaza. It probably didn't matter too much at the moment. If completely necessary, Kai could always call for Viv to come pick them up somewhere. That would not only be slightly frowned upon by the city and the Drakonrhedi, but also extremely embarrassing. It was always an option, however! Kai knew that Viv was always somewhere nearby. The drake was probably flying over the roofs of the city at the moment, keeping her eye on Vivian. The only time she relaxed was when Kai was on the Drakonborg. Kai didn't consciously realize this, but he knew that he could always depend on Viv. She would always be there for him. ”Oh, all right. So are you a cook for a living? Or is that just a hobby of yours?”
Athie gave a breezy nod, "It's a hobby of mine." he stated with a light smile, "Well, back home it was more of a living. I've got quite a large family, so someone's got to to feed all those mouths." True, he had a little help from his mother, but as he got older, Athie found that more of the dinner-time responsibility was given to him. Not that he minded in the slightest, he loved cooking; it was a chance for him to be creative and useful at the same time. Besides, it was one of the few times his brothers restrained from mocking him, partly because they usually had their mouths stuffed full, but also because they genuinely looked forward to what new culinary discoveries their youngest brother had dished up for them. ”By the way, this way is hopefully the way to Market Plaza. From there I think we can figure out where that store of yours is, yeah?”
Athie grinned, pleased at Kai's offer to help, "That would be great." he replied, with a slight bounce in his step, "Maybe if we find this thing, I can rustle up something for the both of us?" He had more than enough in his satchel for two, plus it'd be nice to cook for someone else again.
A little part of him hoped that he wasn't bothering Kai, so he cast a curious look to the other man, "Still, being a Drakonrhedi is way more exciting than I do." His eyes glistened in child-like admiration, innocent and sincere, "What are you doing down on Midgardborg?" he asked, hoping to get a much more straightforward answer out of this particular Drakonrhedi. It wasn't as if his view of the Drakonrhedi had been tarnished by his two previous meetings (quite the opposite in fact), but Kai seemed much more open about his profession, and Athie was keen to discover more. "It's just," he added, "I'd hate to think I was keeping you from something important."
”It's warm. It's comfy.”
Athie nodded happily, glad to see a warm glow return to Kai's cheeks, "Thanks, one of my aunts made it for me." He reached out a hand to wiggle one of the protruding collars, fingers accidentally grazing gently against Kai's neck, "Sheep's wool and everything." he stated, rubbing the fabric to back up his explanation, before withdrawing his hand.
”What, you're not a fan of having your inner organs crushed? Not to mention probably your hips too... That would be terrifying, for certain. I would probably have to pass on that offer.”
Athie gave a visible shudder at such a possibility, hands automatically going to clutch both hips out of instinct, "You and me both, Kai." he winced, "I mean I know some people like it hard and rough but that's just plain overkill."
Did he just say that?
He probably shouldn't of said that.
Athie mentally blamed his brothers. They were always making rude innuendos and risky remarks, it wasn't his fault if that might have rubbed off a little on him...right?
The sound of a crowd from up ahead caught Athie's attention and after turning around another bend in the road they reached the Market Square, bustling with the usual hive of activity. It was good to see so much life in the city, but it made finding the correct route slightly more difficult. Athie blew a raspberry, making it obvious that he was stumped. "I think," he began, raising up a finger to point, "I started off down that street over there, and then I made a couple of turns and from there...Well," he looked back down at Kai with a sheepish smile, "You know the rest. All I remember is that the shop is called the 'The Spicy Stick'." He stopped, eyes closely slowly as he gave himself a mental face-palm.
Seriously, what was it with innuendos today?

Was Athie honestly worried about Kai? That seemed ludicrous to him. Then again, he supposed that Athie didn't know everything that Kai knew -- there was always a time and place for work, and there was always a time for meeting someone knew. Now was most definitely the time for the latter, not for the former. There was no work to be done at the moment except for general duties, and that meant sitting about waiting for someone needed to be healed for Kai. It was rather dull. "Athie, stop worrying. If I had something to do, then I would do it. I'm not someone who's going to beat around the bush for something important. As for the meal, that sounds wonderful. I'd love to experience your cooking." One of Kai's many smiles was on his face as the faced another turn, which Kai made a quick turn. He was starting to get into more familiar territory, and they were only a few more turns away from the Market Plaza. A snort came from Kai as her heard the name of the shop. He hadn't the slightest idea where it could be, but he assumed that once they got to the Market Plaza, Athie would either give him directions or start leading the way. "So, Athie, would you rather deal with the Spicy Stick in you or a mace?"Kai had no issues with making bad jokes (even sexual ones), as he reveled in them. He flashed a devilish grin at Athie before keeping his eyes on the road. The Market Plaza should be just up the road, but there was a sign on the street that caught Kai's attention. "Hey, you said the Spicy Stick, yeah? Is that the store up there?"Kai pointed to a smallish shop that looked somewhat dingy, but also a bit homey. It seemed like quite a fun place to go to Kai, and he was also rather curious as to what it had. Was it for cooking or medical needs? Or something else entirely? Kai buried his face into the inside of the coat, his excitement needing some type of excitement, and he also needed to regain the feeling in his face. To most people, getting excited over something so simple was ridiculous, but for Kai, the entire city was full of adventures waiting to happen. "Athie, stop worrying. If I had something to do, then I would do it. I'm not someone who's going to beat around the bush for something important. As for the meal, that sounds wonderful. I'd love to experience your cooking."
Athuraadd listened to Kai's words, and they convinced enough into relaxing. He flashed a grin, "Well then, I hope I don't disappoint then!" Truth be told though, the food he made was rarely lackluster. Newer recipes were sometimes more of a challenge, and there had certainly been stumbles along the way. But around a cooking pot, he was in his element and picked up unfamiliar dishes as quick as you like.
Still, on the outset, Athie was modest about his ability. Cooking was an odd pastime for a young Viking, especially one from one of the most influential families within Armfastrung, so Athie kept his talents subtly below the radar.
When they reached the Plaza and Athie had deduced a suitable path for them to take, Kai had turned to him with an amused grin on his face.
"So, Athie, would you rather deal with the Spicy Stick in you or a mace?"
Athie's head snapped round to his forward companion, mouth slightly open. And the award for the weirdest question Athie's ever been asked goes to.... Still, he was silently pleased that he was in the company of someone who had a wicked sense of humour in him, Athie liked that. "I dunno, I mean I can't see a mace on you so..." He matched Kai's playful tone, deciding to join in on the joke rather than to get all flustered about it. Besides, he only blushed a tiny, tiiiiny bit.
"Hey, you said the Spicy Stick, yeah? Is that the store up there?"
Athie looked to where Kai was gesturing. Up ahead, he could see the swinging sign depicting a faded, orange tree, with the words 'The Spicy Stick' etched underneath it. "Yeah, that's it. Come on!" Without warning, he set off at a brisk jog, satchel rustling with every bouncy step. When they reached the old shop, Athie peered in through the glass, nose almost pressing against the clear surface. Oh yeah, this was definitely the place for him. The interior inside was all oak paneling and shelves adorned with various bottles and boxes and plant pots with little glass cases over the top of them so they kept their contents well protected.
He went to the door and pushed it open, hearing the little jingling of a bell as it sounded their arrival. He held the door open for Kai, "After you." he smiled politely.
Once they were both inside, a symphony of smells filled his nostrils as he breathed in happily, enjoying the pampering that his senses were getting. For Athie, the expression 'kid in a sweet shop' was an understatement. Once he'd spotted one bottle that caught his interest, he soon saw something else, and then another thing, and then another, all the while making excited 'Oh! Oh!' noises as his gaze discovered something new.
At the back of his subconscious, he hoped what was his own personal little haven wasn't a complete yawn-fest for Kai. He turned to face the other man, hands full with little vials he'd picked up in his excitement. "Err...sorry." he grinned sheepishly, setting down all the bottles but one, "One thing and one thing only." he added, although that was more of a reminder to himself than anything else.
"You know," he said breezily, crossing over to the counter with his intended purchase, "I don't even know your last name yet. Or what clan you come from." Such questions were all pleasant formalities to Athie, obviously it didn't really matter, but Athie thought it might help him better understand his quirky new companion. He certainly didn't want to be rid of him anytime soon. "I'm Armfastrung myself."

Kai happily took the opportunity to go into the shop when Athie offered. From the assault of far too many herbs, Kai quickly surmised that this was a place less for cooking and more for general herb-dealings, whether it's alchemy, apothecary work, or cooking. Still, Kai could pick out a handful of herbs he knew quite well from his dealings with the Medics. There was clearly some Lsen Serum in there. He knew that stench quite well; it was one of the components of the healing syrup that gave it its terrible, terrible taste. But it was extremely effective at bonding the different agents together until they reached the stomach, where they were dispersed through the body after being absorbed. Realizing that he sounded quite like a textbook, Kai deciding to stop picking out the different odors in the air. Instead, he grabbed random vial off of a counter and looked at it, trying to figure out what it was. Of course, this could easily lead to textbook thoughts as well, but it was something that he needed to be able to do. In an emergency situation, everything may not be well organized. The vial that he was currently holding was filled with a light bluish powder, oddly reminiscent of a very particular Vetr. Kai had rarely dealt with him in the past; he was an extraordinarily busy man, and there was little chance for someone as low as Kai to get to know the man. But, he did know the man's hair just as well as everyone else did. After not being able to figure out the substance, Kai decided to call it “Vyrrstuff”. ”Err... Sorry,” Athie began, turning back around, ”One thing and one thing only.” Although this caused a small chuckle from both the shopkeeper and Kai, it was all in good nature. Athie seemed like such an excited kid getting exactly what they wanted for Christmas, but, alas, maturity had to come in. After returning most of the things back to their proper spots, Athie said, ”You know, I don't even know your last name yet. Or what clan you came from.” After a bit of a pause, he continued, ”I'm from Armfastrung.”Kai smiled at the question, happy for any chance to talk about his past. It wasn't necessarily narcissism, as he loved just as much to hear other people's stories, but it was more of a type of encounter that he knew well and enjoyed. ”Me? I'm from Armfastrung, just like you. Of course, I'm not technically with them anymore, so I suppose I'm not just like you. My last name is Raske – which you may have missed back at the Blacksmith, you were quite fascinated with that sword.” Kai would never miss the opportunity to harass someone about the things they did in the past. It was always fun to do so. ”But, beyond that, I'm not quite too interesting. The reason I was able to join the Drakonrhedi was because I showed skills in being a battle medic, with the fact that I could treat an injury on the fly, and combine that with my magical ability, it was... Unexpected, to say the least.” Kai smiled at Athie, curious of the man in front of him. There was more than enough reason for Kai to not be with his clan, but what of Athie? "Why aren't with your clan? What are you doing here? And do you have any plans for where to go from here? Midgardborg is a fantastic city, don't get me wrong. I'm just... Curious." Kai let the last word come out slowly, as he wasn't quite sure if it was the right word. Curiosity was something that needed to be sated by information, but this wasn't specifically curiosity. It was a type of wonder, yes, but it had so many layers of actual caring laced between the curiosity that it would not be sated by a simple answer; he would want to know why and how, and whether or not it was Athie's plan. Perhaps Kai became too invested with people. But he never minded that. In his personal philosophy, it was better to lose someone you love, than to have never known them at all. ”Me? I'm from Armfastrung, just like you. Of course, I'm not technically with them anymore, so I suppose I'm not just like you. My last name is Raske – which you may have missed back at the Blacksmith, you were quite fascinated with that sword.”
Athie blinked in happy surprise, and returned Kai with a grin, "You're Armfastrung too? Hey, small world, right?" Thinking about it, he didn't remember Kai at all, but then again, the other man did look a little older than him and he was a Drakonrhedi, so there was a significant chance he'd hadn't seen the clan since he was sixteen. Still, is was good to find another Armfastie, it almost felt quite homily, "Do you remember a guy called Vilkas Fallonkreath? He looks about your age." And just to clarify, Athie addied, "He's my older brother. Dark haired guy, thick stubble, always has an eagle feather tucked behind his left ear." Well, he was one of his older brothers anyway. There was a good chance Kai might remember a fair amount of his kin; Athie was the youngest after all and there was only a year between him and the next son.
He gave Kai a sheepish smile, embarrassed that he'd forgotten Kai's surname, "Oh, heh. Sorry." There was a slight pinch of pink in his cheeks, "A lot of my family are in the blacksmith trade. So I know a good sword when I see one."
Hmm, he probably should've phrased that a little differently.
”But, beyond that, I'm not quite too interesting. The reason I was able to join the Drakonrhedi was because I showed skills in being a battle medic, with the fact that I could treat an injury on the fly, and combine that with my magical ability, it was... Unexpected, to say the least.”
Athie nodded; his own clan mentor had advised him that the role of battle medic could be a suitable choice for him. Although sometimes Athie thought that he'd been just been told to make him happy. He didn't think there was any way he could do what Kai did; fighting was one thing, but being brave enough to run into the frenzy and war and heal people? Leave that to the professionals. As he was paying for his purchases, he turned his head to look at Kai, "Look at you being all modest," he teased playfully, popping the bottle on herbs in his satchel, "You seem interesting to me." It was true, Athie was genuinely curious about his new friend and interested to learn more about him. He was bubbly and perky like he was, and in him Athie could most likely find a kindred spirit.
"Why aren't with your clan? What are you doing here? And do you have any plans for where to go from here? Midgardborg is a fantastic city, don't get me wrong. I'm just... Curious."
Athie accepted the bombardment of questions happily, it was good to have a nice, relaxed conversation with a new friend, "I'm traveling." he stated proudly, but his satisfied smile quickly faded into something much more demure, "Well...I'm trying to travel. I love my family, and the clan"(and at this, he gestured to the pair of them, as they were linked together in their heritage)"but I wanted to see a little more than just Armfastrung airships, you know? My family used to visit Midgardborg when I was a lad so, I thought here was the best place to start." He rubbed the back of his neck, grimacing a little, "Still, I don't really know where to go from here to be honest. I'm kind of...stuck here really."
Once he was satisfied he had everything he needed, he clasped his hands together, "Right then," he began, turning to Kai and holding up a particular nearby bottle, "Thyme to go?"
He just couldn't resist that one. But he liked to think 'Alvis' would've been proud of that one.
Once all joking aside, he made his way with Kai out into the fresh air. He liked the shop's aroma, but it was good not to be engulfed by a vast manner of different smells. "So...how does honeyed pork sound?" he asked with a soft, lopsided smile. A new recipe, but one that wasn't overly complicated. His own stomach gave a rumble, as he was beginning to feel the pangs of hunger himself. "I know a nice little park area not too far from here. We could set up a fire and get cooking...if you're still free?"

"Look at you being all modest! You seem interesting to me!"
The comment might not have seemed like much to most people. It was, after all, just a polite thing to say if you were in a slightly informal situation. But to Kai, that was an honest compliment. Considering that the man that he was talking to seemed fairly honest, and considering that Kai always took things to the heart, the simple compliment caused warmth to pool in his cheeks (which, in turn, only fueled the blush via embarrassment). Kai really liked this man; he was both funny and nice and seemed to be someone who truly cared about those who he met. "Vilkas Falkonreath? Hm... It's been a long time since I was there, but wasn't he that big burly kid? I was so young then, but I remember him demonstrating that he was definitely way more capable than I was!"Those memories were ones that Kai rarely touched on. He was quite outspoken about his opinions on the clans; he found their bickering to be absolutely ludicrous. They were all human, and all of them very much so at that. It was pointless to fight about what was theirs and what they could do. It was pointless to continue this bloodshed so fearlessly. It was poor bloodshed; very little blood was actually shed. Then again, these were memories that Kai enjoyed. Family was something that Kai enjoyed just as much as the next person. He had such fond memories of the past that it was sometimes painful that he so rarely got to see them nowadays. It was a painful price to pay for being so busy at times. Being a Drakonrhedi might seem to be just fun and games, but it was quite... Dreadful. But Kai was there to maybe keep a bit of the dread away. It was his job, after all, to save lives of people who couldn't fight. He had no way of truly fighting; he was weak, helpless in battle, and was far from agile. But he was not powerless. The strength that being simply in the Drakonrhedi kept Kai going even when things seemed hopeless. If the most powerful group of people on the planet thought he was useful, then he supposed he should as well. So Athie was traveling it seems (or at the very least, had the intentions to travel)! That was quite the exciting adventure to Kai. He wasn't always excited to go down to the surface, and he highly doubted that Athie was one to venture too far outside the villages, but he was certainly brave nonetheless. Brave, indeed. It seems that Athie had something in mind for dinner, so Kai would have to hold on to his thoughts for just a moment or so longer. "Of course I'm still free, and honeyed pork sounds great; are you going to be able to cook well enough on a campfire though?" Kai would have to be impressed if he could cook such a meal on a campfire. Sure, some stoves still used wood, but they were designed to keep the heat even. Deciding to finally get to his thoughts from before, Kai looked curiously at Athie. "Leaving your clan behind is hard," Kai began. He had meant to only think that, but it was a good enough statement, he supposed. "You have bravery, at the very least... But you say you're stuck?" Kai bites his lip and looks around curiously, his mind ticking faster than he was used to. He was good at thinking, of course; he simply wasn't used to having to figure out these problems. This jaunt over to Midgardborg had been to acquire the most recent reports from the head of the Hrafnung Guard and get new weapons, as they had a handful of new Tiros from a handful of villages coming in, and Kai was simply part of the group that was assigned to keep track of everything. (Of course, Kai took a bit of this time to pick up some things he desperately wanted on the ship. A lot of herbs, and some freshwater fish for Vivian. Vivian loved freshwater fish, though it was damn expensive.) "Now, I'm not quite sure on what the policy is on grabbing random people, but I'm sure I can sneak you on for a quick jaunt on the Drakonborg. There's another caravan leaving to Midgardborg about four days after our current one goes back. It makes a quick stop at one of the Wulfing villages though. I think there's some weapons we have to get?" Kai let a shrug and turned to Athie with a smile. "We can talk more about it after we get set up at the park area, of course. Just thought I'd throw that out there."Tags: Athuraadd FallonkreathInspiration: Dream Theater - A Dramatic Turn of Events Notes: vivian is a bitch in my mind, but kai absolutely loves her Table made by Wildsky. |

"Vilkas Falkonreath? Hm... It's been a long time since I was there, but wasn't he that big burly kid? I was so young then, but I remember him demonstrating that he was definitely way more capable than I was!"
Athie rolled his eyes, but grinned nonetheless; "That definitely sounds like Vilkas to me! He's always been a show-off, and he still is." There was a playful groan in Athie's voice, but it was masked by his own sense of warm nostalgia and love for his kin. Vilkas -out of his eight other brothers- was the fourth youngest at 26, but he looked much older due to his impressive size and his prowess. Then again, all of his brothers fitted a similar description. For their relentless teasing of Athie, he still found himself incredibly missing his siblings, and part of him wondered if they missed him. "My brothers at the best of times seem to have more brauns then they know what to do with," Athie admitted, smiling softly, "Which is probably why they liked to joke that the family pool of testosterone dried up when I was born." - One of their less hurtful jibes.
"Of course I'm still free, and honeyed pork sounds great; are you going to be able to cook well enough on a campfire though?"
Athie gave a relieved smile, but furrowed his brow (jokingly, of course) at the suggestion that he couldn't cook on a measly campfire, "Pfft. I can cook stew on a candle." he boasted, but gave Kai a playful nudge to show he was only pulling the other man's leg.
Campfire cooking was easy-peasy for Athie; when he was younger, his father would take him and his siblings down to the surface and teach them basic survival skills, but in the safety of the outskirts of the nearby villages. Of course, Athie struggled with things like hunting, traversing the land, pitching tents heuheuheu and overall outdoor living activities. However, when it came to setting up campfires and cooking meals, Athie was a natural, and would often practice cooking in such a way on the decks of the Armfastrung fleets.
They were reaching the small wooded area set aside for recreational purposes, and as Athie's shoes crunched softly against the slightly frosty grass, he reached around and pulled his satchel off his shoulders, plonking it to the ground with a jumbled clatter. He winced slightly, hoping the ingredients hadn't been knocked around too badly. Regardless, he put his hands on his hips and grinned, "Right then, no time likes the present."
He plopped himself on the ground, sitting cross-legged. He'd picked up a handful of twigs as he'd made his way over and grabbed another handful beside where he now sat. Deciding that he had an adequate amount, he shuffled them into a small pile in front of them, mounting up the wood into the beginnings of his makeshift hob. Around the mound he assembled a ring of stones...just to rule out the possibility of a mini forest-fire, of course. He then took two sticks and then frantically began rubbing them together, praying that the debris wasn't wet.
As he continued to do so, Kai began to speak.
"Now, I'm not quite sure on what the policy is on grabbing random people, but I'm sure I can sneak you on for a quick jaunt on the Drakonborg. There's another caravan leaving to Midgardborg about four days after our current one goes back. It makes a quick stop at one of the Wulfing villages though. I think there's some weapons we have to get?" Athie stopped what he was doing and snapped his head up to look at Kai, eyes shining, "Really? You would do that?" The corner of his lips gently tugged into the beginnings of a smile, "I'd love to!" Another thought occurred amidst his quickly increasing excitement and he glanced around them briefly, in case they were being watched by any other possible Drakonrhedi. "Won't you get in trouble?" he whispered, with a small frown. He desperately hoped Kai would still try him convince him otherwise; the thought of being on board a ship that -for a brief time in his youth- was almost heralded as something of legend.
"We can talk more about it after we get set up at the park area, of course. Just thought I'd throw that out there."
Athie nodded in excitement, brownish locks jostling as he did so. He couldn't allow himself to get carried away now; he suspected that both himself and Kai were eager to get food in their stomachs. He resumed rubbing, and eventually a small spark ignited itself with a small hissing sound and soon the flames began to throng and slither around the broken heap of sticks, crackling and pulsating. Once he was satisfied, Athie produced from his satchel a thick slice of slate, roughly the size of a large bowl, and placed it ever so gently on top of the burning pile, making sure not to catch his hands in the dancing flames. He leaned in slightly, enjoying the warmth of the fire and blew a soft but long streak of air into the pit. The tendrils of fire puffed up slightly in response. Athie smiled to himself, pleased with his efforts, and then looked thoughtful for a moment, "Hmm. We might need more sticks." he mused, a little absent-mindedly.

Seeing about Athie talk about his family was something that was quite enjoyable. The small grin, the annoyance that spoke of love, the fingers of nostalgia. All of that were things that Kai could feel so vividly as Athie spoke, and it was definitely something that he would be quite happy with experiencing again. The way Athie set everything up showed a mixture of experience and inexperience -- a childlike personality with the ability of an adult. He grabbed twigs from around the spot he had chosen and began to work on the fire. Of course, it seemed quite silly to Kai that he was rubbing them together instead of getting something that could create a spark, but it made no difference to him. He didn't say anything as it was pleasant to see Athie furiously rubbing the sticks together. The questions came from Kai's mouth, and this distracted Athie from his fire-making. There was quite the incredulous look on his face, which only fueled Kai's excitement on the topic. There were concerns of trouble, but Kai didn't even care about that. He completely brushed it off; there was no point in doing something if there was no risk, now was there? There was always, always fun in taking risks. Kai made his way over to the soon-to-be fire and sat down next to Athie, rubbing his hands together as he waited for the fire. Perhaps it wasn't exactly the smartest to go on a mini-camping trip in what he was wearing, but the lent coat was most definitely making things quite a lot easier. He would probably be chilled to the bone if it weren't for that. Kai would have to remember to thank Athie again for that. The fire came to life with a miniature roar (it sounded more like a hiss than anything, but Kai wanted to believe), and Athie quickly worked to make sure the fire was going to spread without letting the flame be snuffed away. Soon enough, the fire was a nice little campfire, spreading warmth to the both of them. "Hm... We might need more sticks," Athie said, looking at the fire. They probably would. The fire was going well right now, but it had little sustenance. The twigs were great at burning, but they were too good. The fire would only last half an hour at this point -- maybe an hour if the stars were shining. Indeed, they definitely needed more firewood. Kai looked around the campsite, and then tilted his head backwards to look behind him. A handful of ideas were teasing at his mind, but he snuffed them, instead deciding to consult Athie. "Well, we can go look for some firewood. Alternatively, we can get some fresh wood and try to get the fire hot enough to burn the fresh wood. It'd be a bit riskier, but also easier. I can maybe get the plants to dry up some branches a tiny bit, but that would be... Weird. I'd have to test it out first." Indeed, the fire could cook a meal right now. It was at a good temperature (although it was slightly small), but all of the wood was burning. Typically, that might seem good, but when there was such a high surface area to volume, it wasn't as good. It just meant that you could have hotter fire for a shorter period of time. "But before we look for that, I would like to make sure that you're okay with going to the Drakonborg. We'd be leaving in two days. I'd probably have to sneak you onto the airship proper, but once we were there, not sure if anyone would care too much. Would be too much of a hassle, you see." Was it really a lie if you were downplaying things? Kai certainly hoped not. To be honest, Kai had no idea how anyone would react. They would maybe be annoyed at best, but would take Kai as an invader at worst. Ah, oh well. There was never fun without risks, was there? "Well, we can go look for some firewood. Alternatively, we can get some fresh wood and try to get the fire hot enough to burn the fresh wood. It'd be a bit riskier, but also easier. I can maybe get the plants to dry up some branches a tiny bit, but that would be... Weird. I'd have to test it out first."
"Hmm..." Athie mused aloud again, tapping a finger upon his chin, "Dry leaves might give off a bit of smoke. Still, I've never complained about smoked meat before!" True enough, the more he thought about it, the more the idea appealed to him. He gave Kai a thankful smile, rubbing his hands together as he enjoyed the warmth emanating from the fire.
He felt totally relaxed and comfortable around Kai, probably because he saw so much of his own bouncy spirit within the other man, but even so, he felt that he could totally nerd out over cooking and Kai wouldn't judge one bit. He cast an eye back to the fire, "What we need," he began, "is a really big, thick log." He demonstrated what he meant with the use of his hands, "Or two! Just to keep it going at a slower pace."
As it stood, however, the fire was now sufficiently suitable for cooking; they could add more kindling as they moved along. Athie reached around to pull his satchel next to him, and delve in to search its contents. After a moment, he produced two neatly wrapped cuts of pork loin, thick, tender and juicy. Athie may have been a little lackluster in the whole 'physicality of a Viking', but he still shared the stomach of one. After unwrapping the meat from their protective packaging, he reached forward and carefully placed both cuts side by side upon the now quite-hot slab of rock.
"But before we look for that, I would like to make sure that you're okay with going to the Drakonborg. We'd be leaving in two days. I'd probably have to sneak you onto the airship proper, but once we were there, not sure if anyone would care too much. Would be too much of a hassle, you see."
Athuraadd looked keenly into Kai's eyes, nodding frantically. "Oh, I am, I promise." he answered sincerely; he could imagine the look on his family's face when he would tell them that he -the runt of litter- actually visited the home of Drakonrhedi! "I can sneak," he added, although he wasn't entirely over-confident in his own words, though the look of eagerness on his face masked it, "-and I'll be ever so well behaved. Cross my heart." He flashed Kai his infamous puppy dog eyes trick, "...please?"
In truth, there was a slight apprehension in Athie's heart concerning a cheeky trip to the Drakonrborg. He wondered if they even had a punishment for stowaways, it didn't bear thinking about. Still...Kai seemed quite relaxed with the whole idea, and Athie completely trusted his judgement.
