Humanity has managed to survive, taking to the skies in flights of airships and floating bastions of technology. Does that mean they're safe? Oh, of course not. That's what the Drakonrhedi are for.
The Drakonrhedi are a group of vikings and foreigners, selected for their strength or speed, intelligence, fighting prowess and affinity for magic, and most importantly, their personality. Every year during the summer, Drakonrhedi come around to each Clan and the youth who are sixteen years old (and most are, as the vikings have adapted to the colder climes by trying to give birth in the spring) compete in a tournament to show off their abilities in the categories mentioned above.
The Drakonrhedi have survived this way by only picking those who seem to have a good personality- driven to do well, but not overly aggressive, as well as willing to lay down their Clan pride and pick up the mantle of the Drakonrhedi. That's right- if you're chosen by the Drakonrhedi, you must renounce all claims to any Clan title you might hold, in exchange for the prestige of being one of the drake riders. You are allowed, however, to keep your Clan name if you so desire. Most are willing to do this, and keep their Clan name while still gaining the title of Drakonrhedi.
Within the Drakonrhedi, there are a few simple ranks. The lowest are the Tiro, the apprentices, who start at age sixteen. They study non-stop for around six years, and usually tame their lifelong partner drake at age twenty-two, making them an Iduneus. The Iduneus are your average Drakonrhedi warrior. While an expert at all aspects of the battlefield, they're still leaning from their superiors even more arts of war. The overseers of the Drakonrhedi are called the Pryfektus. Jaded fighters who are usually more on the older side, the Pryfektus usually stay behind the front lines to help with strategy, though a squadron is sometimes called in as an elite force. Few things can stop a group of Pryfektus and their drakes.
The Drakonrhedi are lead by the Council of Vetr (Vetr is the Old Norse word for winter). The Council is comprised of anywhere from four to eight Vetr, and together they decide the course of the Drakonrhedi. To be considered for the position of Vetr, a Drakonrhedi needs to be experienced, level-headed, intelligent, and powerful in battle.
The ranks of the Drakonrhedi are also their titles, and Drakonrhedi is a generic title for any of the drake riders.
The mounts of the Drakonrhedi are snow drakes, a species that was originally fabricated by the Promethaen and rediscovered when the behemoths invaded. They're a mix between a snow leopard and dragon, like a dragon in build with membranous wings and white scales speckled with black leopard-patterned spots. However, they are not true dragons. They're probably five feet tall at their shoulder, and they're smarter than a horse or a dog, but not as intelligent as a human. They communicate to each other in hisses, purrs, and roars.
The drakes are long-lived enough to accompany even the eldest Drakonrhedi for their entire life. Snow drakes are extremely loyal to their riders, to the point where if their Rider dies, they will often go into a deep depression, usually dying of starvation or dehydration.
The art of taming a drake is still relatively new, and it's a secret that the Drakonrhedi keep very close to them. No vikings outside of the Drakonrhedi even have an idea of how to tame a snow drake, and thus snow drake pets are nonexistant outside of the ranks of the drake riders.
Drakes are often outfitted with armor during times of war, or even shoulder-mounted cannons.
The Drakonrhedi are split up into several wings designating their specific function. Pryfektus and Iduneus have specialties, whereas Tiros do not, instead choosing theirs when they become Iduneus.

- THE VANGUARD
This wing makes up the majority of the Drakonrhedi. It's comprised of those who are your standard warriors, set with doing tasks anywhere from defeating behemoths to patrolling the countryside to recruiting new Drakonrhedi. - The Stalkers
Reconnaissance and "public relations." Responsible for finding those who would seek to usurp the Drakonrhedi and disposing of them (by force if necessary), and recon missions. Will also do powerful precision strikes. Especially good at working at night and fighting alone or in small groups.
Head Vetr: Cedric Vyrrson - The Seekers
Scouts and messengers. They're the swiftest, flying high and fast to bring the Drakonrhedi tactical information, scout behind enemy lines, and relay important messages.
Head Vetr: Freya Forsdottir - The Slayers
Comprised of the best fighters, these Drakonrhedi are an elite combat force trained specifically to target and eliminate behemoths. - The Medics
These Drakonrhedi heal and take care of the other wings. They also can function as diplomats and judges.
Head Vetr: Talithe Anyadottir - The Analysts
Scientists and mathematicians, these Drakonrhedi work to research new weaponry for the Drakonrhedi as well as study behemoths for additional weaknesses. - The XXXXXXXXXXXX
WILL BE REVEALED IN UPCOMING PLOT
